The radar room · a folkfox hub

AI visibility, charted from the den's radar

AI visibility is how often answer engines such as Google's AI Overviews, ChatGPT search, Perplexity and Bing Copilot retrieve your pages, cite them in answers and recommend your brand by name. This hub curates every folkfox field note on earning that visibility: grouped by theme, free of hype, every claim sourced.

Ranking is a position on a results page. AI visibility is something quieter and stranger: whether the machine pulls your page into its answer at all, and whether it says your name when it does. Being retrieved, being cited and being recommended are three different hurdles, and a page can clear the first two while falling at the third.

The discipline trades under generative engine optimization, or GEO, and sometimes answer engine optimisation. folkfox reads it colder. Google's own guidance on generative AI search says ordinary SEO best practice is what these features reward, with no separate AI requirements, and llms.txt is consumed by no major system. So this hub holds no hacks. It curates the evidence: what the engines actually do, how to measure your standing honestly, and where generative engine optimisation turns out to be craft with a newer name.

How do answer engines retrieve and cite a brand?

Most AI search visibility is settled before the question is asked: models reach for brands they already know, retrieval rewards pages that answer cleanly in one place, and a citation is not the same thing as a recommendation. These field notes trace how the choosing actually happens.

How do you measure AI visibility without fooling yourself?

AI visibility tracking has become a small industry of dashboards and llm visibility scores, some measuring carefully, some selling weather reports for a climate. The folkfox line: count citations and recommendations separately, tie both to traffic you can actually see, and treat any single score with suspicion.

Who is allowed through the gate? Crawler policy and access

Every answer engine begins as a crawler at your door, and robots.txt is where brave-sounding policy quietly becomes self-harm. Blanket blocks, hasty opt-outs and unswept crawl budgets each carry costs that only show up later. Three field notes on keeping the gate deliberate.

What does AI visibility mean in your industry?

Regulated industries feel the shift first: when an answer engine summarises a market, compliance-shaped content either earns the citation or disappears. Two worked examples from the den's casework.

This week's evidence

The hub is a curation, not an archive: the newest field notes land here first, then settle into their themes. The full flow keeps moving through the SEO and GEO trail and the AI citations trail.

Which crawler governs each answer engine?
