A sportsbook brand entered Canada with no sportsbook. The order was the strategy
A brand built on sports fandom walked into its first international market and left the sportsbook at home. Ontario's own numbers explain why, and they are more instructive than the launch itself.

A casino-first entry, and the numbers that made it obvious#

The fox crosses the stream on the stone that holds, not the one nearest the bank it fancies. On 1 September Fanatics soft-launched in Ontario as the province's 49th operator, and it launched an online casino with no sportsbook attached, per Gaming News Canada. For a company whose entire brand equity is sports fandom, that is a deliberately unromantic decision.
Its head of gaming, Conor Grant, gave the reason without dressing it up, saying the company led with casino because it is fastest to market and will follow with sports. He added that Fanatics is not treating Ontario as a 51st state, which is the more interesting half of the quote and the one most operators get wrong on entry.
The market data makes the sequencing look less like caution and more like arithmetic. Ontario's July figures, reported by Gaming News Canada and published through iGaming Ontario's monthly market performance reporting, show total gaming revenue of $413.6 million, of which online casino produced $330.4 million. Sports betting produced $77.8 million. Casino is not the larger half of that market, it is four fifths of it.
The year-to-date row is the one that should reset an operator's assumptions, because it rules out the obvious objection. July is the sportsbook's quiet month, so a single summer reading might flatter casino. Across the year to date the split barely moves: casino has produced $2.2 billion against $533 million for sports betting, out of $2.7 billion in total. A brand that leads with sportsbook in this market is leading with the smaller product in every month of the year, not just the quiet one.
Sequencing as an online casino marketing strategy, not a compromise#
Most online casino marketing entries are sequenced by brand comfort. A sportsbook brand launches a sportsbook because that is what the creative team knows how to make, the affiliate relationships already exist, and the acquisition calendar is built around a season. Sequencing by revenue instead means launching the product the market actually buys, then bringing the familiar one along later. That is an online casino marketing strategy in one sentence, and it is rarer than it sounds.
The journalist Geoff Zochodne, who covers the Canadian market closely, flagged exactly how unusual this reads from the outside while conceding the logic, which is the honest reaction of somebody who has watched a lot of launches go the other way.
It sounds kinda crazy but Fanatics is thus far taking a casino-first, casino-only approach to online gambling in Canada. Ontario launch today, Alberta launch TBD.
The contrast with the same company's home market is instructive. In the United States Fanatics built sportsbook first and casino after, and it has just been added alongside DraftKings and FanDuel as an official NFL betting partner, taking the official online casino marketing partner slot in that agreement, per the league's own announcement. The brand did not change. The market did, and the sequence followed it.
Compare that with bet365's approach in the United States, where it went live in West Virginia in late August as that state's tenth online operator, per Yogonet. Two credible operators, two different entry orders, both defensible because the underlying market mix differs. The mistake is not choosing one order. It is choosing the order before reading the market, and following a trail somebody else laid in a different wood.
What casino-first does to online casino marketing and acquisition#
A casino-first launch changes almost every acquisition assumption an operator carries over from sportsbook. Sportsbook acquisition is event-shaped: it spikes on fixtures, it lives on odds boosts, and its creative has a calendar. Casino acquisition is habit-shaped, it runs every day of the week, and its economics depend far more on retention mechanics than on a launch offer.
That means the online casino marketing plan is not a rebadged sportsbook plan. An online casino promotion is wagered through rather than settled, so its cost is spread across weeks instead of landing on one whistle. Bonus structures behave differently, because a casino welcome offer is wagered through rather than settled on one result. Creative refresh cycles are faster, because a slot library changes weekly while a fixture list does not. And the peak season inverts: summer, the sportsbook's quiet quarter, is when Ontario set a record.
Those growth rates matter more than the absolute revenue for anyone planning spend. July revenue rose 33 per cent year on year, the year to date is up 26 per cent in total and 30 per cent for casino specifically. A market compounding at that rate is one where acquisition still meets new demand, as distinct from a mature market where the only available growth is somebody else's churn. The second kind is far more expensive to enter and far less forgiving of a weak second month.
Where igaming affiliate marketing fits in a casino-first launch#
Paid channels remain hostile to this category across most of the large platforms, which shapes online casino marketing everywhere it is legal, which is why igaming affiliate marketing carries a disproportionate share of acquisition in almost every regulated market. A casino-first entry changes which affiliates matter, and operators routinely get this wrong by reusing a sportsbook affiliate list for a casino launch. The scent is similar; the quarry is not.
Sportsbook affiliates monetise on tips, odds comparison and fixture content. Casino publishers monetise on game reviews, bonus comparison and slot release coverage, and their audiences arrive with different intent and different lifetime value. The commercial terms differ too: casino deals lean harder on revenue share because player lifetimes are longer, while sportsbook deals skew towards cost per acquisition around event peaks.
For a new entrant in a 49-operator market, the affiliate question is not whether to use them but which tier to buy first. The largest comparison sites will take your money and place you eleventh. A tighter list of game-focused publishers with genuine editorial audiences will usually deliver a better second-month retention curve, which is the only number that matters once the online casino promotion has been spent.
Alongside that, the organic work is slower and cheaper and compounds: the search and answer-engine visibility that puts an operator into the comparison queries, the paid search that is still available on brand and on the narrow non-restricted terms, and the paid social that in this category is mostly about what you cannot say rather than what you can.
Not a 51st state: the part most operators skip#
The second half of Conor Grant's quote is the part worth stealing. Treating a neighbouring market as an extension of the home one is the most common and most expensive error in international expansion, and it shows up in the small things long before it shows up in the numbers: American spellings in the product copy, promotions timed to United States holidays, support hours on the wrong clock, payment methods nobody local uses.
Ontario is a particularly easy market to get lazy about, because the language is shared and the sports overlap. It is also a market with its own regulator in the Alcohol and Gaming Commission of Ontario, its own conduct standards, its own advertising restrictions and its own published quarterly market reporting. Operators who read that reporting before writing the plan tend to arrive with a strategy. Operators who do not tend to arrive with a translation.
The transferable discipline for any folkfox client in a regulated category is the same one: read the market's own published data before committing to a product order, and let the numbers pick the sequence. Good online casino marketing is mostly arithmetic done early. It applies to a clinic choosing which service line to launch first as much as to an operator choosing between casino and sportsbook. The iGaming marketing version simply has better public statistics than most.
A useful sanity check before any entry: if your launch plan would look identical in three different markets, it is not a plan, it is a template. Ontario's own numbers would have told anyone willing to read them that casino was the stone that holds, and the published provincial statistics are free.
One more caution, because it is the failure mode of every casino-first entry that goes wrong. Launching where the revenue is does not mean the sportsbook can be indefinitely deferred. Fanatics built its brand on sports, and a casino-only presence in Canada asks Canadian sports fans to meet the brand somewhere it has never met them before. The sequencing buys speed and it borrows against brand coherence, and the loan comes due when the sportsbook finally arrives and has to explain why it was late.
The provincial figures are unusually well published, which removes the usual excuse. Independent coverage of the July casino record and the province's own reporting both put the same numbers in public, months before any operator has to commit a budget. An online casino marketing plan built without reading them is a plan built on somebody's memory of a different market.
The fox does not cross where the water looks prettiest. It crosses where it has already seen the stones, and it puts a paw on the near one first.
Frequently asked questions#
Why would a sportsbook brand launch online casino first?
Because in some markets casino is where the money is. In Ontario, online casino produced $330.4 million of July's $413.6 million total gaming revenue and $8.78 billion of the $9.88 billion wagered. Fanatics' head of gaming said the company led with casino because it was fastest to market and would follow with sports, which is sequencing by market data rather than by brand heritage.
How is online casino marketing different from sportsbook marketing?
Online casino marketing works on habit rather than events. Sportsbook acquisition is event-shaped, spiking around fixtures and living on odds boosts, with a calendar that quietens in summer. Casino acquisition is habit-shaped and runs every day, so it depends more on retention mechanics and game-library freshness than on launch offers. Bonus structures differ too, because casino welcome offers are wagered through rather than settled on a single result.
Do igaming affiliate programs use the same partners as sportsbook?
Usually not, and reusing the list is a common launch error. Sportsbook affiliates monetise tips, odds comparison and fixture content. Casino affiliates monetise game reviews, bonus comparison and slot release coverage, and their audiences arrive with different intent and lifetime value. Commercial terms differ as well, with casino deals leaning more towards revenue share and sportsbook towards cost per acquisition around events.
Why does igaming affiliate marketing carry so much of the acquisition load?
Because the large paid platforms restrict or ban gambling promotion in most regulated markets, so igaming affiliate programs absorb demand that cannot be bought directly. That makes affiliate terms a strategic decision rather than a procurement one. In a market with 49 operators, the useful choice is not whether to use affiliates but which tier, because a placement eleventh on a large comparison site converts poorly regardless of the fee.
What should an online casino marketing strategy include before market entry?
Four things: the revenue split by product in that specific market, the seasonality of each product, the local regulator's advertising standards, and a retention plan for month two that does not rely on the welcome offer. Published market data usually answers the first two. Ontario publishes monthly figures through iGaming Ontario, which is a level of transparency most markets do not offer.
Is Ontario still a growth market or is it mature?
It is still growing on the measure that matters for acquisition. Monthly active player accounts reached 1.37 million in July 2026, up 44 per cent from 948,000 a year earlier, and total revenue rose 33 per cent year on year. A market adding players at that rate is one where acquisition spend can still find new customers rather than only taking share from incumbents.
