Verndale bets on AI visibility as the content supply chain meets the answer engine
A brand can rank well and still vanish from the answer, and Verndale put money on that gap on 7 October 2026. The Boston agency launched an AI visibility tool set and a content supply chain service for marketers, betting that being named now matters more than being listed.

Verndale's AI visibility tool bet, and the ledger behind it#
A fox reads the field before it moves, and this field just changed shape. Start with the ledger, because the ledger is the entire argument: 68 per cent of US Google searches ended without a click between January and April 2026, measured from Similarweb clickstream data and published by SparkToro. That is not a rounding error. It is the ground an AI visibility tool now reads, and the ground the vixen prowls.
of US Google searches ended without a click, January to April 2026
Verndale moved on that reading on 7 October 2026. The Boston agency introduced AI visibility and content supply chain services for marketers, a three-part offer built for brands that rank well yet go unnamed in the answers that shape consideration.
Tod Szewczyk, managing director of marketing services at Verndale, put the gap plainly: a brand can have strong search rankings and still be missing from the questions that shape consideration Rank is a position. An AI visibility tool measures the mention rather than the position, and the mention is a sentence somebody else is willing to repeat, so the difference decides who gets considered.
So the ledger opens the article, and the line that follows reads the same field over a decade. Roughly 45 per cent of Google searches were zero-click ten years ago, 58.5 per cent in 2024 per the SparkToro 2024 study on Datos data, and 68 per cent in early 2026. A 23-point rise, and the direction has not once reversed.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| US zero-click share | 45 |
| US zero-click share | 58.5 |
| US zero-click share | 68 |
An AI visibility tool turns the ledger into a list of questions to watch, and the reading is the same either way. Read that line the way the fox reads a hedgerow: the traffic has not left the field, it has changed the path it takes across it. The brand that sits on the new path is named in the answer; the brand that only ever held the old path is quietly summarised into the scenery.
What is AI visibility, and why 83 is a snapshot#
So what is AI visibility, in plain words? It is whether the machine names you, recommends you, describes you accurately and leans on sources you would stand behind. Verndale's own release draws the same line: an answer now counts as visibility when it mentions the brand, recommends it, describes it accurately, and relies on sources the business can stand behind. An AI visibility tool is built to watch exactly that, and the definition is the brief.
The measurement behind it is messier than the definition. Ahrefs found an AI Overview on 82.91 per cent of US desktop branded-keyword results on the single day of 29 September 2026, drawn from 232.8 million US desktop SERP crawls across July to September. The monthly average tells a calmer story: 61.3 per cent of branded queries in July, 65.1 per cent in August, 73.3 per cent in September.
A reader asking whether an AI visibility platform can simply be bought should hold the thought. No AI visibility platform and no AI visibility tool substitutes for a supply of quotable, well-sourced pages, and Verndale's own offer pairs the measurement with the content work rather than selling it as a dashboard alone.
The single day and the month are different numbers#
Keep those denominators apart, because conflating them is the standard error in secondary coverage. The 82.91 per cent is one day of crawling. The September monthly average is 73.3 per cent, and the analysis at SearchEngineAnswer is explicit that the crawl rate and the 100-brand panel are separate denominators. A single day is a weather report, not a climate.
The person in the field does not have time for the distinction, and that is the useful part. A working SEO asked the blunt version two days after the wire, on the r/SEO subreddit:
AI is recommending my competitors over me, what can I do to get AI recommending me. Any tricks to get traffic back to my website?
An AI visibility tool cannot answer that question on its own, and that is the market Verndale is selling into. It is not a rankings complaint; it is a displacement complaint, and it arrived inside 72 hours of the announcement. The DemandSphere series reported by Search Engine Land then shows how erratic the same surface can be, moving from roughly 27 per cent of tracked branded queries to a peak of 90.48 per cent on 27 September, all markets and devices, with no announcement from Google. Nothing here measured a click, and no AI visibility tool can invent one.
A separate study reframes why the mention matters at all. Gartner found 69 per cent of B2B buyers turn to sales reps to validate AI-generated insights, and the release cites 45 per cent of surveyed buyers using generative AI during a recent purchase. The answer starts the consideration; a trustworthy brand finishes it.

The content supply chain that feeds the answer#
The second half of Verndale's bet is less glamorous and more load-bearing. An AI visibility tool can tell a brand it is missing, but it cannot manufacture the content that earns a citation, so the agency paired the offer with an AI-Ready Content Supply Chain Assessment and an Agentic AI Readiness Assessment, alongside the complimentary SEO, GEO and AEO assessment.
The three services Verndale named
- SEO, GEO and AEO assessment
- AI-Ready Content Supply Chain
- Agentic AI readiness
The proof the agency leans on is a university content rebuild. Its Quinnipiac University AI agents case study reports article optimisation coverage rising from zero to 90 per cent, a 33 per cent lift in content recall and a 25 per cent lift in AI readiness, with 150-plus CMS editors affected.
An AI visibility report that only counts mentions misses the supply-chain half of the story, because the platform that wins a citation is the one with a standing stock of quotable pages rather than a single loud one. An AI visibility platform can show a brand the gap; it cannot close it alone, which is why Verndale sells the content machine beside the measurement.
- 0% to 90%
article optimisation coverage
- 33%
lift in content recall
- 25%
lift in AI readiness
- 150+
CMS editors affected
Read those four figures as a supply-chain claim rather than a marketing one. Content that is structured, sourced and consistent is content a generative system can quote without risk, and the case study is the agency's argument that the supply chain, not the single page, is the unit that needs fixing. The fox does not fill one burrow and call it a den.
An AI visibility tool flags the gap; a content supply chain closes it. That framing is where folkfox content marketing lands too. A solitary optimised page is a lucky catch; a repeatable supply chain is the whole den, and it is the den that keeps a brand named when the model rewrites the query in its own words.
The branded gap is closing, and nobody measured the clicks#
The most telling number in the whole story is a gap, not a level. Branded queries used to carry an AI Overview far less often than non-branded ones, and that distance has more than halved in three months. An AI visibility tool would have drawn the coverage climb, and it would still show nothing about the clicks, because nobody took them.
| Item | Value |
|---|---|
| July 2026 | 61.3 to 73.5 |
| August 2026 | 65.1 to 74.7 |
| September 2026 | 73.3 to 78.3 |
A dumbbell reads left to right as branded, then non-branded, and the shrinking bar between the two dots is the story. Branded coverage climbed 12 points from July to September while non-branded coverage rose 4.8, so the two lines are converging, not crossing. Say it that way and the chart stays honest: the story is convergence, not branded overtaking non-branded.
The separate 100-brand panel sharpens the point. On bare brand names from the Interbrand Best Global Brands 2025 list, AI Overviews appeared for 5 of 98 usable results on 1 July and 63 of 100 by 30 September, and 48 of those 63 sat in position one, at an average position of 1.49. That is a visibility surface arriving above the first blue link.
Here is the discipline that keeps the piece honest. No click data exists for branded AI Overviews. Ahrefs, DemandSphere and the Chris Long test all measured coverage, not clicks, so any claim that branded answers are draining traffic is inference, not measurement. Mintec and Index Lab both track the same trend with the same blind spot. The honest sentence is short: coverage is rising and the traffic effect for branded queries is unmeasured.
The one measured click effect in the source pack runs the other way, and it belongs to non-branded queries, where prior Ahrefs work found an AI Overview cut click-through on the top-ranking page by 58 per cent. Do not quietly move that figure onto branded searches. It does not live there, and a borrow like that costs a brand its credibility far faster than it wins a citation.

How to be the brand the answer names#
An AI visibility tool is only as good as the pages it is pointed at, and the fox does not wait at the warren mouth for a rabbit to volunteer. Google's own guidance is refreshingly boring, and it is where every plan should start. To be eligible as a supporting link in AI Overviews or AI Mode, a page must simply be indexed and eligible to be shown in Search with a snippet, per Google Search Central's AI features guidance, and there are no additional technical requirements.
The generative-AI optimisation guide from Google Search Central is equally plain: no llms.txt, no content chunking, no AI-only rewriting, no special schema and no inauthentic mentions are needed. AEO and GEO remain SEO on Google's surface, which is why the practitioner thread above still ends at the same answer, better structured and better sourced content.
None of this replaces a strategy; it rewards one. The brands that get named hold a standing supply of quotable pages, and that is the work behind folkfox SEO and GEO services, the content supply chain and the measurement layer in AI consultancy. The demand side borrows the same discipline from brand strategy and PPC management, and the folkfox newsroom keeps the wider trail of how these surfaces move.
It closes with an unglamorous instruction. An AI visibility tool will tell you the answer; only the work changes it. Get indexed, get opted in, write the sentence that answers the question, then measure coverage rather than hope. The vixen does not guess the depth of the stream, she puts a paw in first, and no brand should bet its visibility on a hunch.
Frequently asked questions#
What is AI visibility?
AI visibility is whether AI answers, such as Google AI Overviews or a chatbot, name your brand, recommend it, describe it accurately and cite sources you would stand behind. It is measured in mentions and citations rather than in sessions or rankings.
How does an AI visibility tool measure AI answers?
An AI visibility tool samples the questions your buyers ask, records whether your brand appears in the answer, notes what it says, and logs which sources the answer relied on. That turns a vague anxiety about being missing into a coverage figure you can track month to month.
What did Verndale launch on 7 October 2026?
Verndale introduced AI visibility and content supply chain services for marketers on 7 October 2026. Its AI visibility tool set and its content supply chain and agentic AI assessments are the offer, alongside a complimentary SEO, GEO and AEO assessment.
Is 83 per cent of branded searches really showing AI Overviews?
The 82.91 per cent figure is a single-day snapshot, 29 September 2026, from Ahrefs. The September monthly average for branded keywords is 73.3 per cent, up from 61.3 per cent in July, so quote the day and the month as separate numbers.
Do branded AI Overviews reduce clicks?
Nobody has measured it. Ahrefs, DemandSphere and the Chris Long test all measured AI Overview coverage rather than clicks, so a branded lost-traffic claim is inference, not data. The one measured click effect, a 58 per cent drop, was on non-branded queries.
Does generative engine optimisation replace SEO?
No. On Google's surface, AEO and GEO remain SEO. A page still has to be indexed and eligible to show a snippet, and Google states no llms.txt, content chunking, special schema or AI-only rewriting is required.
