How structure scales Apple Ads
Structure is strategy made visible: campaigns split by theme and market, ad groups by keyword intent, naming that reports itself. Build it once, properly.

Apple Ads organises spend into campaigns holding ad groups, which hold keywords and ads. Split campaigns by theme and market, ad groups by keyword intent, and name everything so reports read without a decoder.
The hierarchy in thirty seconds#
Three levels carry everything: campaigns set placement, markets, budget and schedule; ad groups set keywords, audiences, bids and ads; keywords and ad variations live inside ad groups. Campaigns and ad groups can be duplicated, paused and reactivated at any time, and you can run as many campaigns as the plan needs. Removed campaigns cannot be restored, so pause rather than delete when in doubt. Apple own campaign creation help describes how the levels fit together.
Respect the direction of control: budgets and markets at campaign level, intent and bids at ad group level. Mixing the two, such as stuffing unrelated keyword themes into one ad group, blurs reporting beyond repair. Start from the Apple Ads hub, then build down deliberately.
The four search results campaign types#
Apple recommended practice splits search results into four campaign types: Brand for your app and company names on exact match, Category for nonbranded descriptive terms on exact match, Competitor for rival names in your category on exact match, and Discovery for broad match plus Search Match mining. Discovery itself holds two ad groups, one broad match with Search Match off and one with no keywords and Search Match on. Apple own structure best practices lay out all four with their match types.
This split exists so budgets follow intent: brand defends cheaply, category and competitor prospect, discovery funds learning. Harvest winning discovery terms into exact match homes regularly or the miner keeps paying rent on what it found. First campaign setup shows the starter shape.
Splitting by market and budget#
Separate campaigns by country or region where budgets, languages or customer values differ materially. Grouping similar markets in one campaign eases management; splitting dissimilar ones protects reporting from blended averages that flatter and mislead. Consider grouping by language, region, customer profile or finance centre, and keep a written note of the grouping logic beside the account. The markets guide covers coverage and grouping in depth.
Expanding into new markets deserves fresh campaigns with their own budgets rather than widening a proven one. New regions bring different tap costs and conversion rates, and shared budgets let the familiar market starve the newcomer. Give each expansion room to prove itself, then consolidate only with evidence.
Naming that reports itself#
Name campaigns for theme and market, ad groups for keyword intent: Brand UK Exact, Category US Broad, Discovery Search Match. Reference the theme in the campaign name whenever keywords or ad variations follow one, so filters and pivots work without a decoder ring. Consistent delimiters beat clever abbreviations, because midnight debugging favours the obvious. Document the convention on one page and enforce it at creation, never in cleanup.
Good names compound: weekly reports write themselves, new starters navigate unaided, and audits finish in hours. Bad names tax every read forever. Fold naming review into campaign groups hygiene so drift gets caught quarterly.
Scaling without tangling#
Scale by cloning what works into new themes and markets, not by bloating ad groups past readability. Keep ad groups themed tightly enough that every keyword could share one ad variation honestly. Watch the ceilings: 5,000 keywords and 5,000 negatives per ad group give generous room, but readability runs out long before capacity does. Pause losers rather than deleting them, preserving history for later lessons.
Review structure quarterly against spend: themes that earn their own budgets graduate, themes that never clear noise fold back into discovery. If the account has grown past its skeleton, ask our team for a structure audit before the next budget rise.
Frequently asked questions#
What are the levels in Apple Ads?
Campaigns hold ad groups, which hold keywords and ads. Budgets and markets sit at campaign level, intent and bids at ad group level.
What are the four campaign types?
Brand, Category, Competitor and Discovery, each on defined match types, with Discovery split into broad and Search Match ad groups.
Should markets share campaigns?
Similar markets may share; differing budgets, languages or values deserve separation so reporting stays honest.
How should I name campaigns?
Theme plus market plus match signal, with consistent delimiters, documented once and enforced at creation.
Delete or pause old campaigns?
Pause. Removed campaigns cannot be restored, while paused ones keep history for later lessons.
When should structure change?
Quarterly against spend evidence: graduate earners, fold back noise, and audit before each budget rise.
