How break-even CPT protects profit

CPA equals CPT divided by conversion rate. This guide turns that chain into a bid ceiling your unit economics can carry.

Quick answer

CPA equals CPT divided by tap-to-install rate, so break-even CPT equals revenue per install times conversion rate. Price bids from that ceiling, then compare live CPT against AppTweak medians of $0.92 global and $1.91 US.

Section 02

Break-even CPT in one line#

Multiply revenue per install by your conversion rate and the answer is the highest CPT that still breaks even. A subscription app earning $4.00 per install at a 60 per cent tap-to-install rate breaks even at $2.40 per tap, before any return target. Divide again by your target return and you hold the profit-safe ceiling.

Revenue per install must be honest: trial starts that cancel, refunded purchases and lapsed subscribers all dilute it. Value each install through conversion values before trusting the line, and keep the ceiling written down where whoever edits bids can see it.

Section 03

A worked example#

Take a finance app in the US. SplitMetrics 2025 panel data (estimated vendor data) reports search CPT near $2.25 with CPA near $3.76, tap through near 9.7 per cent and conversion near 66.2 per cent. Read their Apple Search Ads cost study for the panel behind the figures.

Now the maths: at 66 per cent conversion, a $2.25 CPT yields about $3.41 CPA, inside the panel CPA. If your revenue per install is $5.00, break-even CPT is $3.30, so the panel price leaves headroom; at $3.00 revenue it is $1.98, and the panel price loses money. Max CPT ceilings turn that verdict into bids, and US and UK benchmarks sharpen the yardstick by market.

Section 04

Conversion rate is a bid multiplier#

Every point of conversion rate raises the CPT you can afford. At a $4.00 allowable CPA, a 50 per cent conversion rate supports $2.00 CPT, while 65 per cent supports $2.60: same economics, 30 per cent more bidding power, earned on the product page rather than in the auction.

That makes screenshots, previews and ratings part of bidding strategy. Tune the listing through screenshots and app previews, align each term with a fitting page via custom product pages, and reprice bids only after the page work lands.

Section 05

Category baselines worth knowing#

US category medians from AppTweak (estimated vendor data) set expectations before you spend: Games near $4.21, Finance near $3.55, Shopping near $2.05, Education near $2.06, Health and Fitness near $1.59 and Productivity near $1.55. A games bid that looks reckless in utilities is simply the market clearing where it clears.

Judge your CPT against your own category and market, never against a global average. Split brand from generic before comparing, because blended figures hide leaks; brand, category and competitor terms shows the split, and discovery versus brand structure keeps the campaigns honest.

Section 06

From maths to live bids#

Set each max CPT below its break-even ceiling, guard the ad group with a CPA cap near your allowable CPA, and let volume prove the maths before scaling budgets. Bids express the economics; they never repair them.

Wire the ceiling into CPA caps, fund enough days of learning through learning budgets, and if the numbers argue with your instincts, ask our team for a second read before raising anything.

Questions

Frequently asked questions#

How do CPT, conversion rate and CPA connect?

CPA equals CPT divided by conversion rate. CPT is the auction price, conversion rate is the product page verdict, and CPA is their product.

What is break-even CPT?

Revenue per install times conversion rate, divided by any target return. It is the highest tap price that still pays.

What CPT should I expect on Apple Ads?

AppTweak medians (estimated vendor data) sit near $0.92 global and $1.91 US for search results, with wide category spreads.

Why does the SplitMetrics panel run higher?

Panel mix: different customer bases skew toward pricier categories and markets. Your category decides your baseline, not any global average.

How does conversion rate change my bids?

It multiplies them. Lifting conversion from 50 to 65 per cent at a $4 CPA raises affordable CPT from $2.00 to $2.60.

Should I bid the full break-even CPT?

No. Hold back for your return target and for variance, and let a CPA cap guard the ad group while data gathers.
