How *max CPT* ceilings win taps
Your max CPT caps what each tap can cost. This guide shows how to open, when to raise and where keyword bids beat the ad group default.

Max CPT is the most you will pay per tap in a Manage Bids ad group. Set an ad group default near the in-account suggestion, price exact keywords individually, and raise in small steps when relevant keywords stall.
Ceiling, not clearing price#
Your max CPT is a ceiling you set, not a clearing price the auction owes you. Apple describes a dynamic auction in which your bid and your relevance together decide whether your ad shows, and relevance decides how far below your ceiling you land. There is no public formula and no fixed clearing rule, so treat every bid as the most you would happily pay, never as the price you expect.
That framing changes how you bid. A ceiling you can afford lets relevance do the discounting; a ceiling set from hope either starves delivery or buys taps you cannot monetise. Apple own guidance on setting and adjusting bids walks the mechanics inside the account. Start from the Apple Ads hub for the family view, and fix the maths first in our CPT to CPA guide.
Open near the suggestion#
When you create a Manage Bids ad group, Apple shows a max CPT suggestion built from what it knows about your app and what comparable advertisers pay. Open near it. Apple own starting default is $1.00 in the US, which suits broad discovery, while contested categories need more from day one.
Calibrate with estimated vendor data: AppTweak medians put global search results CPT near $0.92 and the US near $1.91, with Games near $4.21 and Finance near $3.55. Read their Apple Ads benchmarks with the estimated vendor label in mind, then open above your category median for priority terms and near it for tests. Search popularity tells you which terms deserve the premium, and first campaign setup puts the opening structure around them.
Ad group default versus keyword bids#
The ad group default max CPT covers every keyword without its own bid, including keywords you add later. A keyword level bid overrides the default for that keyword alone, which is how you pay up for proven exact terms while holding the default modest for everything new.
Apple own notes on keyword bids confirm the override behaviour and recommend tiered bidding across ad groups. Run the tiers through exact match for the premium tier, broad match for the middle tier, and our bid tiers guide for the full ladder.
Raise rules that protect CPA#
Raise when a relevant keyword with healthy tap through and conversion behaviour cannot win views. Move in small steps of 10 to 20 per cent, wait for a full day of delivery between moves, and stop the moment volume arrives at a CPA you can carry.
Log every change with the reason beside it, because bid history is the only way to separate a bid problem from a relevance problem later. TTR diagnostics shows the read before each raise, and budget maths keeps the daily cap consistent with the new ceiling.
When not to raise#
Do not raise a keyword whose tap through rate sits far below the account norm. Low tap through means searchers see your ad and pass, which is a relevance problem, not a bid problem, and a higher ceiling buys more rejections at a higher price.
Fix the match first: tighten with negatives, check fit with relevancy, and harvest the queries that actually convert via harvesting. If the read still puzzles you, our team audits bid versus relevance splits every week.
A weekly bid cadence#
Review bids weekly, not hourly. Pull keyword delivery, tap through and cost per acquisition, move the two or three keywords that matter most, and leave the rest. Small accounts die from fiddling, not from patience.
Reconcile taps to installs monthly so reported CPA stays honest; reconciliation sets the routine, and learning budgets explains why young campaigns deserve steady hands before sharp bids.
Frequently asked questions#
What is max CPT on Apple Ads?
The most you will pay for a tap in a Manage Bids ad group. It caps your cost, while relevance decides how far below the cap you land.
What should my first max CPT be?
Near the in-account suggestion, around $1.00 in the US for discovery, and above your category median for priority exact terms.
Do keyword bids override the ad group default?
Yes. A keyword level bid replaces the default for that keyword only, and the default keeps applying to new keywords.
How much should I raise a bid?
In steps of 10 to 20 per cent with a full day between moves, stopping once volume arrives at an affordable CPA.
Why does raising my bid not buy views?
Usually weak relevance: low tap through means searchers pass on your ad. Fix the keyword fit before paying more.
How often should I review bids?
Weekly for most accounts. Move the few keywords that matter and leave the rest to gather clean data.
