How negative keywords stop wasted taps
Negative keywords are how Apple Ads says no: block terms or word sets at campaign or ad group level and stop paying for searches your app cannot convert. Both block types plus the review habit, covered here.

Negative keywords in Apple Ads block ads from chosen searches at campaign or ad group level, with exact as the default block type. Add them during creation, via the Keywords tab or bulk upload, and review search terms weekly to keep waste out.
What negatives actually block#
Negative keywords keep search results ads from appearing for chosen searches, which controls costs and lifts efficiency by removing queries your app cannot satisfy. The default block type is exact match: the ad will not show for the precise term you name, while close variants can still trigger it. That narrowness is deliberate, since it stops you accidentally excluding relevant traffic with a broad stroke.
Broad negatives widen the block: the ad stays out of any search containing all the named words in any order, though queries dropping one of the words can still serve. Apple own negative keyword help walks both behaviours with worked examples, and our exact match guide shows the mirror logic on the positive side.
Exact blocks for surgery#
Use exact negatives when one specific term poisons an otherwise healthy ad group: a neighbouring job title, a freebie variant, a use case your app pointedly does not serve. Because the block is precise to the phrase, surrounding variants keep serving, which protects reach while removing the rot. Apple's own illustration is an advanced puzzles app negating kids puzzles on exact: that phrase stops, while longer queries containing it can still show.
Exact blocks also fence discovery groups, keeping harvested brand and category terms out of automation once they graduate. Our harvesting guide runs that promotion loop, and Search Match needs the same fence to stay honest.
Broad blocks for families#
Use broad negatives when the whole family of a phrase is junk: every ordering, every casual variant, the lot. All the words must be present for the block to bite, so choose the shortest word set that still describes the junk; fewer words means wider cover. A three word broad negative blocks every search containing all three, whatever the order, while a query swapping in a synonym for one word slips through.
Start broad on clear junk themes, then tighten to exact if you spot a convertible cousin inside the blocked family. Our broad match guide shows the discovery reports where these families first appear.
Levels, limits and adding flow#
Negatives live at campaign or ad group level: campaign level protects everything beneath it, ad group level sculpts single themes without touching siblings. Apple allows 5,000 negative keywords per ad group, which sounds generous until a broad discovery group starts finding junk in three languages. Add them during creation, from the Keywords tab of a live group, by converting existing positives, or fastest of all through the bulk upload template.
Up to 50 keywords per page can be converted to negatives in one action, which makes post review cleanup quick. Apple own adding flow help details each route. Our limits guide keeps the 5,000 ceiling in view as lists grow.
The weekly negation habit#
Negation is a rhythm, not a project: read the Search Terms report weekly, convert junk the same session, and never let rejected queries buy taps twice. Sort ruthlessly into permanent junk, watched borderlines and one off oddities; only the first bucket earns a negative on sight. Discovery groups without this habit subsidise automation with your budget and teach you nothing.
Log every addition with its reason, because six months later nobody remembers why a term was blocked. Our relevancy guide helps judge the borderlines, and the Apple Ads hub holds the wider workflow these habits plug into.
Mistakes that cost real money#
The classic errors repeat across accounts: no negatives at all in discovery, exact only where broad was needed, campaign level blocks strangling one good ad group, and set and forget lists that fossilise while search behaviour moves on. Each has the same signature, which is spend drifting toward queries nobody would have chosen on purpose.
Audit negative lists quarterly against current search terms, and prune blocks that now cost you convertible traffic. When the lists tangle beyond rescue, ask our team for a negative audit before the next budget increase.
Frequently asked questions#
What is the default negative match type?
Exact match. It blocks the precise term while close variants can still trigger your ad.
How do broad negatives differ?
They block any search containing all the named words in any order. Drop one word and the block releases.
Where can I add negative keywords?
At campaign or ad group level, during creation, from the Keywords tab, by converting positives, or by bulk upload.
How many negatives fit per ad group?
5,000 negative keywords per ad group, which rewards organised lists over panic additions.
How often should I add negatives?
Weekly with the Search Terms review. Junk blocked the same day never bills you twice.
Can negatives hurt performance?
Yes, when overbroad blocks strangle convertible queries. Audit quarterly and prune stale blocks.
