Betway bought Manchester United and left the shirt alone

A voluntary ban arrives this season, and the first big deal after it tells you exactly what it did and did not change. The logo moved. The money did not.

Quick answerPremier League gambling sponsorship on the front of matchday shirts ends from 2026/27. Betway's Manchester United deal shows the money moving to training kit and stadium branding, which research indicates carries most of the exposure anyway.
SECTION 01

What one deal reveals about gambling sponsorship#

gambling sponsorship

A fox does not take the shortest path, it takes the one with the fewest eyes on it. That vulpine instinct explains a great deal about how gambling sponsorship money is moving this month, because gambling sponsorship did not leave the sport, it changed the trail it takes across it.

Manchester United announced on 4 August 2026 that Betway becomes its Official Principal Partner and Exclusive Global Betting Partner in a multi-year agreement with Super Group. The club's own release states that the Betway logo will feature on the training kits of the men's and women's teams, and that the brand will feature prominently on matchdays at Old Trafford and the Progress with Unity Stadium, per Manchester United.

Note what the club does not say. It never mentions the front of the shirt, and it never states a fee. Both of those come from elsewhere: iGaming Business puts the value in excess of GBP 18 million and states plainly that branding will not feature across the front of the shirts from 2026/27 because of the incoming ban. Betway's own announcement calls it the operator's biggest partnership to date and adds a detail the club leads on less: safer gambling and betting-integrity resources for players, staff and fans.

The ban itself, precisely#

Premier League clubs collectively agreed in April 2023 to withdraw gambling sponsorship from the front of matchday shirts, becoming the first UK sports league to do so voluntarily, according to the Premier League. The measure takes effect from the end of the 2025/26 season, which means this season is the first one under it.

What survives matters more than what goes. Sleeves, advertising hoardings, training kit and stadium branding all remain permitted, as Sky Sports reported at the time. Eight clubs then carried betting front-of-shirt sponsors worth an estimated GBP 60 million a year, with a three-year transition allowing existing deals to run on.

What the ban touches, and what it leaves
Front of matchday shirt

Prohibited from 2026/27 under the clubs' voluntary agreement. This is the entirety of the restriction.

Shirt sleeve

Still permitted. A smaller placement, and one that remains in nearly every broadcast frame.

Training kit

Still permitted, and where Betway's Manchester United branding lands. Heavily photographed, widely distributed on social.

Pitch-side hoardings and LED

Still permitted, and by volume the largest single source of on-screen gambling exposure.

Stadium naming and matchday

Still permitted. Betway appears at Old Trafford and the Progress with Unity Stadium.

Set out like that, the gambling sponsorship measure looks less like a ban and more like a relocation. That is not a cynical reading, it is an arithmetical one, and the arithmetic has been done.

SECTION 02

Two independent studies put shirts under a tenth of it#

This is the part of the gambling sponsorship story that rarely survives the news cycle, and it is the part an operator's marketing director should have on a slide. The quarry is not the shirt, it never was.

The peer-reviewed work is Torrance and colleagues, published in a peer-reviewed addictions journal and available via PubMed Central. Its method is stated in full: ten Premier League broadcasts from the 2022/23 season, in-play only, two coders, inter-rater reliability reported using Krippendorff's alpha, and every logo visible for over one second coded for product type, brand, location and duration.

The finding is stark. Of 15,663 gambling logos recorded, just 1,075 were front-of-shirt, which is 6.9%. Pitch-side hoardings carried 52.3%. Gambling-associated logos appeared roughly 16 times per broadcast minute, about one every 3.8 seconds. The authors' own summary is that approximately one in twenty gambling and gambling-like logos falls under the voluntary shirt-front ban.

Independently, the University of Bristol's annual study reaches the same neighbourhood by a different route. Its research page reports 21,815 gambling messages across 29 hours of live coverage from the opening weekend of August 2025, a rate of 12.6 per minute, and finds that only 9.6% of gambling messages in live broadcasts appeared on shirt fronts. The formal report, Gambling Marketing and the Premier League: Continued Saturation and Failed Regulation, was published on 8 October 2025.

Two teams, two seasons, two methodologies, one conclusion. That convergence turns a rhetorical point into a defensible one: the gambling sponsorship restriction addresses under a tenth of what a viewer actually sees.

SECTION 03

The rules that did not move#

Relocating a logo does not relocate the obligations attached to it, and this is where casino sponsorship strategy meets licence conditions rather than media planning. Every gambling sponsorship asset carries its paperwork with it.

The Gambling Commission requires that advertising is undertaken in a socially responsible manner and that licensees comply with the CAP and BCAP codes administered by the ASA, set out in its advertising and marketing guidance. That obligation is not guidance in the soft sense: it sits in social responsibility code provision 5.1.6, and breaching a social responsibility provision exposes an operator to licence review, suspension, revocation and financial penalty.

The content rules matter more than the placement rules now. CAP Code section 16 requires gambling marketing to be socially responsible with particular regard to protecting children and young persons, prohibits advertising likely to be of strong appeal to under-18s, and bars anyone who is or seems to be under 25 from being featured gambling or playing a significant role.

Sitting above the statutory floor is the industry's own layer. The Betting and Gaming Council's gambling sponsorship codes of conduct, developed with the Premier League, EFL, The FA, the Women's Super League and other governing bodies, set four principles: protection of children and young people, social responsibility, reinvestment, and integrity. Its wider codes library includes one on partnered posts on football clubs' social media accounts, which is the placement most likely to trip an operator up this season.

The policy backdrop remains the Gambling Act review White Paper, High stakes: gambling reform for the digital age, published on 27 April 2023, two weeks after the clubs' announcement. The sequencing was not accidental.

For Malta-licensed operators there is a parallel set of obligations. The Malta Gaming Authority requires adverts to comply with the Gaming Commercial Communications Regulations and to display the licensee's name, licence number, minimum participation age and responsible gaming information, with social media caught by the same rules. Its Commercial Communications Committee Guidelines set out the committee's approach.

Super Group holds Malta licensing, so the Manchester United partnership answers to both frameworks at once. That dual exposure is ordinary in igaming marketing and it is routinely underestimated at the planning stage.

SECTION 04

What this means for your media plan#

Strip away the headlines and five commercial consequences of the gambling sponsorship shift fall out, none of which require you to have an opinion on gambling policy.

First, gambling sponsorship scarcity has been manufactured in one placement and nowhere else. Front-of-shirt inventory in the Premier League is now closed to gambling brands, which raises competition for sleeves, training kit and stadium rights. Prices in the surviving placements do not fall when a substitute is removed.

Second, valuation models built on shirt-front prominence are now wrong. If shirts were 6.9% of logo exposure, then a pricing model weighting them heavily was mispricing the whole portfolio, and the correction cuts both ways.

Third, the reputational argument against gambling sponsorship does not go away, and operators should expect that. Bristol's team titled its report Continued Saturation and Failed Regulation, which tells you how the next campaign will be framed by critics whatever an operator does.

Fourth, the creative burden rises as the placement burden falls. When a logo cannot sit on a shirt front, brands compensate with activation: social content, competitions, creator partnerships. Every one of those is a CAP Code surface, and social activations are where strong-appeal failures actually happen. We covered the adjacent version of this in the regulator stopped reading your ad and started reading your funnel.

Fifth, and least discussed: concentration risk#

The most 2026-current audit of the commercial picture comes from independent analyst Paul Quinn writing as The Esk, published 15 February 2026. It puts the Premier League front-of-shirt market at GBP 408 million with gambling brands accounting for GBP 95 million, and counts 11 of 20 clubs carrying gambling shirt sponsors in 2025/26. This is a fan-run analyst site rather than an institution, its method is stated but not externally validated, and it is Everton-focused, so treat it as illustrative and attribute it by name.

Even discounted, the direction is clear. Roughly GBP 95 million of shirt-front gambling sponsorship spend has to find somewhere else to go, and it is not leaving the sport.

Each surviving placement with its regulatory status and the specific compliance question a marketing team should answer before booking it.

Pitch-side and LEDPermittedDoes creative meet CAP 16 on strong appeal?

That second row is the one that catches operators. A sleeve logo reproduced on a child-sized replica shirt is a different conversation from a sleeve logo on a broadcast, and the club, not the operator, usually controls the merchandise line.

SECTION 05

Planning a sponsorship that survives the next review#

The pattern in regulated categories is consistent: voluntary measures precede statutory ones, and the operators who plan gambling sponsorship for the second version rather than the first are the ones still trading comfortably three years later.

Assume the perimeter narrows again. A restriction that addresses under a tenth of measured exposure invites the obvious follow-up question from researchers and legislators, and both studies above are already asking it in print.

CNBC asks whether the ban reduces exposure or just relocates spending, and a sponsorship buyer's view is telling.

So build the gambling sponsorship on things that survive tightening. Reinvestment programmes, integrity work and safer-gambling resources, of the kind Betway attached to its Manchester United agreement, are defensible in a way that raw logo frequency is not. That is not window dressing, it is the part of the deal that will still be permitted after the next review.

Then get the governance right before the creative starts. In a dual-licensed structure, the operator's Malta obligations and its UK obligations both bite on the same asset, and neither regulator accepts the other's sign-off as a substitute. We set out how that sign-off chain breaks in the regulator asked who signed off the campaign.

Finally, watch the other jurisdictions, because the trail from a voluntary code to a hard ban is well worn. The Dutch experience is the closest cautionary case, and we wrote about what it gets wrong in what the Dutch gambling advertising ban gets wrong. A brand whose acquisition depends on one placement in one league is a brand with a single point of failure.

The fox reads the whole hedgerow rather than the one hole it came through, and prowls the edge before committing. Football shirt sponsorship was never the whole of the visibility, and treating its loss as the end of the gambling sponsorship story would be the most expensive misreading available this season.

Questions

Frequently asked questions#

What exactly does the Premier League gambling sponsorship ban cover?

Only the front of matchday shirts. Clubs agreed voluntarily in April 2023 to withdraw gambling sponsorship from that placement from the end of the 2025/26 season. Sleeves, training kit, pitch-side hoardings and stadium branding are all unaffected.

Why is Betway still sponsoring Manchester United?

Because the ban covers one placement, not the partnership. Betway is Official Principal Partner with branding on men's and women's training kits and at Old Trafford and the Progress with Unity Stadium, none of which the voluntary agreement restricts.

How much gambling exposure does the shirt ban actually remove?

Less than a tenth. A peer-reviewed study found front-of-shirt was 6.9% of gambling logos across ten broadcasts, and University of Bristol research put it at 9.6% of live-broadcast gambling messages. Pitch-side hoardings carry far more.

Is gambling advertising around football legal under the CAP Code?

Yes, with conditions. CAP Code section 16 permits advertising associated with activities that appeal to under-18s provided appropriate steps limit the advertisement's own appeal. It separately bars anyone who is or appears under 25 from featuring in a significant role.

What happens if an operator breaches the advertising codes?

It is a licensing matter, not just an ASA one. Compliance sits in social responsibility code provision 5.1.6, so a breach exposes the operator to the Gambling Commission's full powers, including licence review, suspension, revocation and financial penalty.

Do Malta-licensed operators face different rules?

Additional ones. The Malta Gaming Authority requires adverts to carry the licensee name, licence number, minimum age and responsible gaming information under the Gaming Commercial Communications Regulations, and applies the same rules to social media.
