Novig bought the attention. The funded account is still unpaid.

A prediction-markets challenger spent a summer being talked about. The harder question for its marketing team, and for every operator watching, is how many of those people deposited.

Quick answerNovig's Sweeney campaign bought attention fast, but funded accounts decide whether it paid. Measure sign-up, first deposit and second deposit separately, and judge the campaign by the welcome offer's cost, not the buzz.
Section 01

What the Novig campaign actually bought#

  • $10

  • $25

  • 2.5x

The fox reads the trail as well as the kill. Novig's "Just Sports" campaign, built around actor Sydney Sweeney and launched ahead of the 2026 NFL season, has been one of the most discussed pieces of prediction-markets marketing this season. iGaming Business reports that its central joke is that Novig offers "just sports", with none of the political, war or death markets available elsewhere in the category.

The reaction was loud and mixed. iGaming Business notes criticism from athletes including Olympic swimmer Ariarne Titmus and British sprinter Amy Hunt, who argued it reduced women's place in sport. We are not here to referee that argument. The commercial reading is simpler: the campaign generated a great deal of attention, and every Novig review, forum thread and search for the Novig sportsbook that follows is the scent of that attention.

Attention is the first rung, and it is genuinely worth something. The trouble is what sits on the rungs above. Tony Kenny, a former communications executive at Paddy Power and William Hill, told iGaming Business the campaign did a good job of getting attention, but that "people have to put in their hard-earned cash". His point is the point of this piece: an ad that people share is a different asset from an ad that people deposit after.

Attention on one pan, the deposit on the other.

That reply, seen by thousands, is short and sarcastic, but it points at the real question. Someone pays for the celebrity, and a challenger brand has to work out whether that is the margin, the offer or the media budget. In a market where price is the product, the ad is part of the price.

Section 02

How Novig got here, and why the timing matters#

The campaign did not launch into a vacuum. Covers reports that Novig completed its shift to prediction markets and launched nationwide on 4 August 2026 as a sports-only platform "designed to compete with traditional sportsbooks". Casino.org adds that it enforces a 21+ age requirement, "making Novig the only prediction market to enforce this higher age threshold".

So the brand is roughly seven weeks into a national launch when the campaign lands, still a young den in a crowded wood. That is the moment when awareness has to be turned into an account, before the novelty fades. Kenny's warning to iGaming Business is that the campaign will be forgotten quickly: "This will be a non-story next week", and the real question is what happens as attention starts to die down.

There is regulatory texture behind the launch, and it is not the story here. The CFTC has said that registered exchanges "have faced an onslaught of state lawsuits" (CFTC press release), and DLA Piper describes the central legal question as whether such markets "must also comply with state gaming laws" (DLA Piper). A federal appeals court has already leaned one way: Holland & Knight summarises the Third Circuit as holding that "the CEA preempts state regulation of futures trading" (Holland & Knight). What matters for marketing is that the Novig prediction market and its rivals are still being argued over in courts while they buy media, which is a reason to keep claims plain and offers clear.

A short definition helps here. In prediction markets, customers trade contracts on outcomes rather than placing a bet with a bookmaker. For a marketing team, that changes what the offer looks like: the welcome deal is expressed as trade credits rather than bonus bets, and the customer is invited to think like a trader, not a punter.

Section 03

Where prediction markets money is going in the operator results#

Campaign stories are easier to judge against the numbers operators publish. Flutter's second-quarter release says "Sales and marketing expenses were 61% higher year-over-year, driven by the FIFA World Cup and FanDuel Predicts investment", and it also says "We view prediction markets as a very attractive opportunity, incremental to sports betting and iGaming" (Flutter Q2 2026). Yogonet adds that Flutter expects "Roughly $50 million in market-making revenue" during 2026 (Yogonet). Flutter attributes the spending rise to football and to FanDuel Predicts, so part of that number is a prediction-markets number and part of it is the World Cup, but together they show how heavily the sector is buying attention while describing prediction markets as additive rather than a threat.

The affiliate side shows the same shift. InterGameOnline reports that Better Collective's second-quarter revenue rose nine per cent year on year to €89m, "with growth led by North America, where prediction markets content, revenue share and talent-led media drove expansion". New depositing customers grew 24 per cent and its EBITDA margin climbed from five per cent to 26 per cent. If you run a sportsbook affiliate business, the message is that prediction markets content has become a growth line, not a curiosity.

Flutter's sales and marketing spend grew 61% year on year, far faster than Better Collective's revenue (9%) or its new depositing customers (24%), on each company's own Q2 2026 reporting.

These are different companies with different denominators, so read the bars as a mood, not a ratio. But the mood is consistent with the Novig case: money is moving into acquisition faster than acquisition is producing revenue, which raises the bar for proving that an attention spike paid back.

One caution on reading affiliate results. A rising margin can come from mix and cost control as much as from demand, and the report does not attribute it to any single campaign. It is context for how much the category is investing, not evidence that any one brand's advertising worked.

Three honest lessons for the funded account test#

In practice, the welcome offer is the number that translates attention into cost. RotoWire's September affiliate page for the offer lists it as "Deposit $10, Get $25 in Trade Credits" (RotoWire). That is 2.5 times the deposit in credits, and it is the figure a finance team will put next to the media bill.

Three lessons, in order
Count deposits, not downloads

Report sign-up, first deposit and second deposit as three separate lines. A creative that wins sign-ups can lose deposits.

Price the offer with the ad

Add the welcome offer's cost to the media cost before judging the campaign. The two together are your acquisition cost.

Plan the week after

Attention decays quickly. Line up a retention offer and a second creative before the first one peaks.

The first lesson is the hardest to enforce, because sign-ups arrive quickly and deposits arrive slowly. A dashboard that shows only the first will flatter a viral campaign for weeks. Ask for the funnel by day and by source, and refuse to sign off a creative until first-deposit rate is visible.

The second lesson is about who pays. If you promote through a sportsbook affiliate, the affiliate's cost per acquisition, the welcome offer and the media spend are three different budgets that must be added together. A brand that counts only one of them will believe it is cheaper than it is.

The third lesson is the one Kenny put plainly. The buzz will fade, and the brand has to decide what it wants to be associated with once it does. Novig's answer so far is a sharp product idea, sports without the noise, carried by a loud campaign. The test is whether the product idea survives the quiet week, and a plain Novig review from a customer next month will say more than any headline. The funnel data will say more than the applause, so follow the scent of the second deposit, because that is the real quarry.

Section 05

What operators and affiliates should do next#

If you are an operator, the lesson from the Novig campaign is to instrument before you launch. A creative that splits opinion is a useful stress test of your funnel, because it shows whether awareness converts to a funded account or merely to conversation. Build the report first, then buy the media.

If you are an affiliate, treat prediction market platforms as a distinct quarry with its own audience. The Better Collective results suggest that content aimed at trading customers can earn revenue share and new depositors, but the offer language and the compliance framing differ from a classic bookmaker page. Test them separately.

If you are a supplier, notice that the questions being asked of Novig are the same ones being asked of every brand that buys attention: what did it cost per funded account, and what did the second deposit look like. Any tool that answers those two questions clearly will find buyers.

Attention is the deposit slip. The deposit is the account.

That is the practical shape of the growth work our iGaming marketing team does with operators and affiliates, alongside the sports-betting notes in our earlier pieces on sportsbook advertising in the NFL season and exclusive ad deals that walked out. Start from the funnel, and let the creative earn its place on top of it.

Questions

Frequently asked questions#

What is the Novig prediction market and how does it differ from a sportsbook?

Novig is a US sports-focused platform where customers trade contracts on outcomes rather than placing bets with a bookmaker. Covers reports that it launched nationwide on 4 August 2026 as a sports-only prediction market, and Casino.org says it enforces a 21+ age requirement.

What is Novig?

Novig is a US sports-focused prediction market platform. Covers reports that it launched nationwide on 4 August 2026 after completing its shift to prediction markets, and Casino.org says it enforces a 21+ age requirement. Customers trade on sports outcomes rather than placing bets with a bookmaker.

What are prediction markets?

Prediction markets let customers trade contracts on the outcome of events, including sports. Prices reflect the crowd's view of the probability. Regulation is still being argued, with courts weighing whether federally registered markets must also follow state gaming laws.

Is Novig a sportsbook or one of the prediction market platforms?

Novig positions itself as a sports-only prediction market rather than a traditional sportsbook. The category is competing with sportsbooks for the same customers, and Flutter describes prediction markets as incremental to sports betting in its Q2 2026 release.

How does a sportsbook affiliate earn from prediction markets?

Affiliates can earn through cost per acquisition or revenue share on new depositing customers. Better Collective says growth in North America was led by prediction markets content, revenue share and talent-led media, with new depositing customers up 24 per cent.

Is the Novig sportsbook the same as a traditional bookmaker?

No. Novig positions itself as a sports-only prediction market rather than a traditional sportsbook, although people often search for the Novig sportsbook by that name. Customers trade contracts, and the welcome deal is expressed as trade credits rather than bonus bets.

Is there a Novig app, and what does the welcome offer include?

Novig customers use the platform to trade sports contracts. RotoWire's September affiliate page for the offer lists the welcome deal as a $10 deposit for $25 in trade credits. Terms vary by state, so check the operator's own terms.

Is the Sweeney campaign working for Novig?

The campaign won attention, according to iGaming Business, but funded accounts are the real test. Former Paddy Power and William Hill executive Tony Kenny said people have to put in hard-earned cash. Conversion and second-deposit data would settle it.
