The primer

What is Reddit Ads and why does context win?

Most marketers file Reddit under experimental social. That assumption leaves margin on the table. Behind the interface sits a 2.1 billion dollar ad business growing around 74 per cent a year, reaching 130.3 million daily users across more than 100,000 communities where 40 per cent of new conversations concern purchase decisions.

The auction rule: Reddit runs a second-price auction where bid, targeting and creative decide delivery. The account floor is 5 dollars a day, Reddit recommends at least 50 dollars per ad group, and new ad groups need roughly 20 optimisation events plus two to three weeks before you judge them. Targeting follows community members across Reddit; keep each targeting type in its own ad group.

The ten Reddit Ads formats compared

FormatWhat it buysBest first fit

Video AdsAutoplay muted video, 2 seconds to 15 minutesDemos, trailers, app previews
Carousel Ads2 to 6 cards, each with its own URLRanges, comparisons, tutorials
Free-Form AdsLong-form rich text to 40,000 charactersDeep dives that invite comments
Conversation PlacementAds between comments in live threadsHigh-intent consideration
TakeoversReserved 24-hour ownership: front page, category, First ViewLaunches and tentpole moments
AMA AdsPromoted ask-me-anything events with RSVPLaunches with a human worth questioning
Dynamic Product AdsCatalogue-matched prospecting and retargetingRetailers with real feeds and traffic
Lead Generation AdsOn-platform forms piped to CRM over ZapierDemos, waitlists, consultations
MAX CampaignsAI automation of targeting, creative, placements, budgetTraffic and Conversions with live signal
The proprietary Reddit edge
  • Community Intelligence: MAX optimises on models trained over billions of posts and comments, reporting back in Top Audience Personas.
  • Shopping momentum: Internal analysis credits DPA with double the ROAS of standard conversion campaigns; Shopify integration went global in May 2026.
  • The thread itself: 42 per cent of user time is spent in conversation threads, and campaigns buying feed plus conversation reported 83 per cent higher brand awareness.

What makes Reddit creative earn the click?

Redditors reward transparency, utility and humour over polished corporate packaging. Write like a person, lead with the teardown, and let UGC-style demos beat studio gloss.

The creative law: run 3 to 5 materially different variants per ad group, judge on CTR or CPA after 5 to 7 days, then carry the winner into audience tests.

Favour 4:5 framing, natural product-in-use imagery and captioned short video. Refresh on CTR decay: fatigue is expected, dislike is a diagnosis, not a destiny.

Which rooms deserve your budget?

Community targeting follows members across Reddit, so relevance beats subscriber count. Start with a handful of clusters where the problem is discussed weekly, found via Reddit Pro keyword tracking.

The separation law: one targeting type per ad group, at least 15 communities per community group, or your reporting blends into soup.

OR within a type, AND across types. Leave gender open, layer geography deliberately, and let automated targeting expand only after manual audiences prove themselves.

Should MAX drive, or should you?

Lowest Cost maximises volume inside budget; Cost Cap trades delivery for cost control. MAX automates targeting, rotation, placements and budget for Traffic and Conversions on top of both ideas.

The autopilot law: suggestions steer, constraints bind, and a manual baseline stays live until MAX beats it twice.

Alpha evidence (17 per cent lower CPA, 27 per cent more conversions) is Reddit internal testing, not a guarantee. Check your account for access: rollout is still completing.

How much Reddit budget is enough, honestly?

The floor is 5 dollars a day; the guidance is 50 dollars per ad group, 3 times target CPA, and 100 dollars a day for lower-funnel tests. Below that you buy anecdotes, not evidence.

The patience law: two to three weeks minimum, 70 per cent prospecting and 30 per cent retargeting to start, then reallocate to what clears CPA.

Scale winners 10 to 20 per cent every few days through adjacent subreddit pods. Sub-500 dollar tests rarely produce decision-grade data.

Why does Pixel plus CAPI come before bidding?

Conversion campaigns without shared events can only optimise to clicks. Eight standard events, one consistent Conversion ID across Pixel and CAPI, and deduplication switched on: that is the whole foundation.

The signal law: Pixel plus CAPI together, validated in Events Manager, before a single pound of conversion budget.

Expect Ads Manager to report above GA4: 28-day click plus 1-day view attribution, impression-dated conversions, and research journeys that convert after a week all inflate the platform count honestly.

Fox Field Guide · 06

Who owns the comments on your ads?

Votes and replies are public, so the thread is part of the creative. Decide staffing before launch: who monitors, who escalates, who answers, and in what voice.

The thread law: reply helpful and human, acknowledge valid criticism concretely, and read every comment as creative intel CTR cannot give you.

Disabling comments is allowed when moderation cannot be staffed, but it trades away engagement and insight. Never delete criticism you could have answered.

Fox Field Guide · 07

Which format does this job need?

No single format is best; the job picks the tool. Control with image, explain with free-form, compare with carousel, demonstrate with video, launch with takeovers and AMAs, sell with DPA, capture with lead gen, automate with MAX.

The chooser law: start every new account on promoted posts, then test one new format at a time against the control.

Conversation placement is not a format but a surface most formats can use. Video Views cannot go there, and carousels cannot carry lead forms: check the matrix before you promise.

Fox Field Guide · 08

How do catalogues hunt on Reddit?

Dynamic product ads match feed products to shoppers for prospecting and retargeting, in feed and conversation. Six products minimum, matched product IDs between catalogue and events, fresh feeds always.

The shelf law: prospecting and retargeting in separate ad groups, around 100 dollars a day planned, Shopify or Smartly keeping catalogue and pixel in sync.

Manual product carousels serve small curated ranges better than starved automation. Reddit internal analysis claims double ROAS for DPA; verify it on your catalogue with a holdout.

Fox Field Guide · 09

How does B2B win on a consumer playground?

Target practitioner communities, not job titles: the buyers research inside technical rooms long before sales hears from them. Pair core subreddits with problem keywords and adjacent communities.

The asset law: lead with a benchmark, guide or teardown worth reading, gate it behind a native form, and route engagers into LinkedIn, search and nurture.

One agency playbook reported 6x ROI with 63 per cent lower CPL pairing Reddit practitioner reach with LinkedIn follow-up. The offer has to earn its place in the feed.

Fox Field Guide · 10

How do you launch so Reddit notices?

Category takeovers buy 24 hours of first-brand exposure across feed, conversation and banner. AMAs manufacture trust with RSVP mechanics and a 5-day runway: organic post, pre-event ads, live push, highlight afterlife.

The moment law: the spike must land on capture already running, with Reminder Ads carrying date-driven demand for Awareness and Traffic objectives.

SEGA paired free-form education with targeted posts and a gaming category takeover; Sony paired character presence with video and AMA activity. Tentpoles need both spectacle and substance.
