Ask Play now writes your comparison page, and your reviews are the first draft

Summarise with

On 13 October Google gave its store search a new job: to put two apps side by side and say which is better. The copy it reads is yours, and so are the reviews.

Quick answerAsk Play, Google Play's Gemini-powered search, can now generate side-by-side app comparisons from store listings and user sentiment. App marketers should tighten listing claims, answer review themes and keep store hygiene clean.
Section 01

What Ask Play actually changed on 13 October#

The fox reads a new trail before it walks it, and this one is easy to misread. In its Android Developers Blog post, Google says Ask Play can now generate dynamic, side-by-side app comparisons directly in search results. The consumer-facing Google Play update puts it a little differently: starting today, Ask Play can generate a comparison between apps, highlighting key differences and user sentiment.

Both descriptions describe the same behaviour. A shopper types a question, Ask Play answers with a comparison, and the apps being compared are summarised from what they have said about themselves and what their users have said about them. The developer post is explicit about the first part: Ask Play summarises your store listing and user reviews. That is the sentence every app marketer should underline.

Ask Play is not new. AppTweak's I/O 2026 review says it was first introduced in December 2025 as the Gemini-powered chat interface embedded in Google Play. What is new is that the answer is now a structured comparison rather than a conversation, and that structure is far easier to skim, screenshot and share than a chat reply.

Read the rest of the update with the same caution. Google reports that Play in Gemini has driven over 6 million app installs in just two months since launch, but that figure appears only in the developer post and not in the consumer one, so treat it as Google's own claim. Game finder is described by Google as rolling out in English to U.S. users, with more markets coming soon. And the AppTweak review adds that most AI features are currently only applied for English-language devices, even in markets where they are live.

For European app teams the geography is the practical headline. AppTweak says EEA markets including France and Germany are significantly behind, with no confirmed rollout timeline. A comparison engine that does not yet speak your market is a risk to plan for, not an emergency to staff for this week.

Section 02

Your listing and your Play Store reviews are now the draft#

A comparison needs raw material, and Google has told us where it comes from: the store listing and the reviews. That sentence changes what each of them is for. A listing used to persuade a human who was already looking at your page. It now also feeds a summariser that will place your claims next to a rival's, strip the adjectives and keep the nouns.

Play Store reviews are the harder half, because you do not write them. The reviews a model summarises as user sentiment are the same reviews your support team reads on a Monday. If three hundred people say the offline mode is unreliable, the comparison will say so, in a neutral sentence, next to a competitor whose offline mode nobody mentions.

Apple has been here first. Its ratings and reviews page says its summaries are generated using large language models, and that each summary compiles highlights and key information from individual user reviews into a short paragraph. Apple's research note on the pipeline says it first filters out reviews containing spam, profanity and fraud. Read Apple Machine Learning Research for the method, and note that it gives no accuracy percentage for the summaries.

The review you did not write is now the paragraph a shopper reads about you.
folkfox, on Ask Play and Play Store reviews

That absence of an accuracy figure is the quiet point. Neither store has published an audit of how faithfully its machine summarises reviews, and we found no independent audit of either. The comparison you are judged on may therefore be right, loosely right or confidently wrong, and you will not know which unless you read it yourself. A weekly check of the comparisons that mention your app is a cheap habit that no tool will do for you.

Section 03

What the research says about reviews and summaries#

The patient prowl through the literature produces two honest facts and one gap. The first fact is old and observational. Pagano and Maalej, in User feedback in the AppStore: an empirical study, analysed over one million reviews from the Apple AppStore and report that feedback content has an impact on download numbers. It is an exploratory study without effect sizes in its abstract, and its date is contested between 2013 and 2023, so lean on the direction and not the magnitude.

The second fact is about summaries rather than reviews. An arXiv study of LLM summaries of mobile app reviews, Shrestha and Mahmoud, used GPT-4 and a Chain of Density prompt and ran an empirical evaluation with 48 study participants to assess the readability of the generated summaries. Readability is not accuracy. The study tells you the summaries are legible, not that they are right.

The gap is the one that matters commercially. We found no experimental study of whether replying to reviews on Google Play lifts ratings or installs, and no public conversion statistics from either store. Vendor surveys exist and are cheerful. Treat them as sales material.

None of this is a reason to wait. It is a reason to separate what you control, which is your listing and your replies, from what you cannot, which is how a machine weighs the two.

Section 04

Five fixes for the comparison era#

The following moves cost little and age well, because each is also good store hygiene without Ask Play. They are ordered by how quickly they pay back.

The five fixes, in order
Rewrite claims as comparables

Replace superlatives with facts a comparison can set beside a rival: offline support, price tiers, platforms, export formats. Nouns survive summarising, adjectives do not.

Mine the reviews for themes

Tag the last three months of reviews into five or six themes and rank them. The top two negative themes are what a comparison will say about you.

Answer the themes in the listing

If reviewers keep asking about a feature, say plainly in the description whether it exists. A direct answer in your copy gives the summariser a second source.

Reply where it helps

Reply to substantive reviews with specific fixes. Replies are public text on your page, and nobody has shown they move installs, so do it for users, not for the algorithm.

Keep the store clean

Google's content policy asks you to avoid spammy store listings, low quality promotion, and efforts to artificially boost app visibility. Do not buy reviews in an era when reviews are summarised.

Notice what is missing from that list: new tooling. Many app store optimization tools will rebrand themselves for comparisons this month, and some will be useful, but none can read the reviews for you better than a person with a spreadsheet and an afternoon. Choose a tool for the job it already does well, such as tracking rankings and screenshots, and do the theme work by hand.

Keywords also change shape. The list of app store optimization keywords you have maintained still decides who finds your page, but a comparison is chosen by intent, not by exact match. Write the listing for the question a shopper would ask Ask Play, such as which of two apps works offline, and the keyword sits inside the answer.

Elements you can vary3 to 7
Elements a developer can vary: three in Apple's product page optimization tests (icons, screenshots, previews) against seven in Google Play custom store listings (name, short and long description, icon, screenshots, video, feature graphic) per a vendor guide. Different features, so a rough guide to flexibility.

That chart is the case for treating app store optimization google play work as its own craft. Apple's product page optimization overview says you can test up to three different app icons, screenshots and previews to see which resonate best with customers. Google's custom listings, as App Radar's guide describes them, flex the name and descriptions as well, and leave only the category, contact details and privacy policy unchanged. The wider lever is also the one a comparison will read.

Section 05

Measuring something the shopper reads before you#

Ask Play changes where the first impression forms. If the comparison is read before the listing, then the listing's conversion rate measures a person who has already been briefed. That makes it dangerous to compare conversion before and after 13 October as if nothing else moved. Write the date on your dashboard and annotate it.

Track three things weekly: the themes in new reviews, the claims in your listing against your two nearest rivals, and what Ask Play actually says when asked to compare you. The last one is a screenshot and a note, and the archive of those screenshots will be the most useful dataset your team owns in a quarter.

The same discipline runs through our earlier work on Google Play deadlines and verification checklists, on Apple's organic ad test and what it means for app store search and on usage-based billing on Google Play. Each of them says the store is a negotiated space and the rules move with little notice.

If you want an outside read of how your listing and reviews compare to your two nearest rivals, folkfox app marketing does that audit, and SEO and GEO carries the same logic to the open web, where AI summaries are doing the equivalent job. The copy discipline belongs with content marketing and the reporting question belongs on a call: contact us.

Questions

Frequently asked questions#

What is Ask Play?

Ask Play is the Gemini-powered chat and search interface inside Google Play. AppTweak says it was first introduced in December 2025. From 13 October 2026 it can generate side-by-side comparisons between apps, highlighting key differences and user sentiment.

How does Ask Play compare apps?

Google's developer post says Ask Play summarises your store listing and user reviews to produce the comparison. Google has not published how it weighs the two, so a clear listing and healthy reviews both matter.

Do Play Store reviews affect Ask Play comparisons?

Yes, according to Google, which says user sentiment is part of the comparison. Play Store reviews you cannot edit therefore shape how a rival is set beside you, so reading and answering their themes is worthwhile.

Which app store optimization tools should I use for Ask Play?

No tool is built for Ask Play yet. Keep the app store optimization tools that already track rankings and screenshots, and do the review theme analysis yourself or with a spreadsheet. Judge any new feature on whether it shows what a comparison actually says.

Do app store optimization keywords still matter?

Yes. Your app store optimization keywords decide whether people find the page at all. Comparisons are driven by intent, so write the listing around the questions shoppers ask, and let the keywords sit inside the answers.

Is app store optimization google play work different from Apple?

Somewhat. Apple limits product page tests to icons, screenshots and previews, while Google's custom store listings can vary more, including descriptions. Both stores now summarise reviews with language models, so review hygiene matters equally on each.
