Coinbase Advanced meets a returning Pro: one trust brand, two doors, and the promotion rules between them

Summarise with

Coinbase answered a chorus of 'bring back Pro' with one word, and a Deribit-powered Global Exchange. The marketing question is how one trust brand can carry two doors with different risks behind them.

Quick answerCoinbase Advanced is the trader tier today, and Coinbase Pro returns by year-end alongside a Deribit-based Global Exchange with up to 10x leverage. Brand tiers need separate risk language and jurisdiction-by-jurisdiction promotion checks.
Section 01

Coinbase Pro is back, and Coinbase Advanced has a bigger sibling

Some of the cleverest brand moves look like a shrug. At about three in the morning UTC on 7 October, Coinbase's markets account answered a long-running chorus of fans with five words, and a fox reading the trail would notice that the chorus got what it asked for.

“Bring back Coinbase Pro” Okay.

The substance behind the post is a relaunch. According to the announcement as republished by FX News Group, Coinbase is connecting US and international derivatives markets into one pool, and the Deribit integration creates what the press calls Coinbase Global Exchange. Coinbase Pro returns by year-end. For a brand that retired the name in 2022, when Cointelegraph reported it would start sunsetting Coinbase Pro, this is a reversal of one of the most visible tidy-ups in crypto branding.

It also tells us how Coinbase thinks about its audiences, and where Coinbase Advanced sits among them. Its annual report describes two experiences. Simple trading is for consumers who want ease, while Advanced trading is for people who want a robust set of features. The same filing says Coinbase operates four exchanges, which is a lot of doors for one house. Coinbase Advanced was the answer to the audience question, and Coinbase Pro is now a sharper answer, so the split between Coinbase Advanced and Pro is the story.

Section 02

What Coinbase Deribit changes: one pool, more leverage, one trust brand

The product facts matter for Coinbase Advanced and its siblings, because the marketing rules follow them. The same announcement says the integration offers leverage of up to 10x on selected major assets and up to 5x on other supported assets, and that US retail access to options is coming later this year. Deribit, the options venue at the centre of the deal, had over $30 billion in bitcoin options open interest as of 30 September, per Coinbase, a figure we could not check against Deribit's own statistics page, which renders by script.

The deal's price tag shows why a number needs a date. CryptoBriefing reports that Coinbase acquired Deribit for approximately $2.9 billion, the figure announced at signing. Coinbase's own annual report puts the purchase consideration, after Coinbase's share price moved, at $4.3 billion. Both are true, on different dates. Marketers who quote a deal value should say which one.

The regulatory hinge is a US one. Coinbase said, according to Digital Today, that a CFTC guideline enabled the connection. The CFTC's 29 May release says staff acted on a request from Coinbase's registered futures commission merchant, and the accompanying staff letter 26-17 is about how Deribit perpetuals are categorised. One crypto outlet summarised the effect plainly: the clearance does not change the underlying market risks.

One house, two doors.

A final detail about trust. CryptoBriefing's analysis says offering up to 10x on major assets, and that is the marketing problem in one line. The brand's most valuable asset is the reputation for being careful, and the new product is, by design, less careful.

Section 03

Brand architecture for crypto leverage trading

Brand architecture is the unglamorous question of how many names a company needs, and Coinbase Advanced is a live example. Coinbase is not alone in answering it with tiers. Kraken's own explainer says Coinbase offers two primary interfaces, and that is a competitor describing the pattern, so read it as an observation, not an endorsement. Meanwhile OKX announced, on the same day, a strategic investment at a $25 billion pre-money valuation, while CoinDesk observed that companies built around crypto trading are trying to become one-stop financial platforms. Note that OKX says its round extends an earlier investment at the same valuation, so the figure is not a fresh mark.

Two models compete. A branded house keeps one name, Coinbase, and describes tiers such as Coinbase Advanced beneath it. A house of brands gives each audience its own name, which is what Pro and Global Exchange suggest. Neither is right. The test is whether a visitor can tell, within five seconds and before they click, which product is for them and what it asks of them. For crypto leverage trading that test is also a compliance test, because the audience the product is for is the audience the promotion rules protect.

The third card is our reading, not Coinbase's, and we mark it so; the Coinbase Advanced card is the one Coinbase's own words support best. What the first two cards come straight from the annual report, and the third rests on the announcement. Where this matters for agencies is the onboarding and the landing page. Each tier needs its own risk language, its own call to action and its own measurement, which is why our Web3 marketing work begins with a map of which promise each page makes to whom.

Section 04

The promotion rules that follow the product

Brand tiers are easy to draw and hard to police, so look at the rules a marketer actually has to meet. In the UK, the Financial Conduct Authority's crypto promotions regime, set out in policy statement 23/6, combines clear risk warnings, a ban on incentives to invest, positive frictions, client categorisation and appropriateness assessments. The regulator's good-practice page adds a 24-hour cooling-off period for some investors. And the FCA has been busy: 1,528 crypto alerts out of 2,329 in 2025, in a total of 2,329 alerts that year.

1,528 of 2,329 alerts is about 66%, calculated from the FCA's freedom of information release. Crypto promotions are a large share of the regulator's enforcement attention.

The leverage question is separate and older. Back in 2020 the FCA announced a ban on the sale, marketing and distribution of derivatives to retail consumers that reference certain cryptoassets. That ban is on the record and we did not re-verify its current scope, so read it as context, not as a ruling on today's product. The FCA also says that the full scope of regulated activities will expand from 25 October 2027.

In the European Union, the cryptoasset rulebook, MiCA, asks providers for information that is fair, clear and not misleading, including in marketing communications. Our earlier notes on the MiCA review and marketing rules and on crypto promotion after the SEC FAQs cover how the rules differ by jurisdiction.

One piece of evidence deserves a quiet pause. In an online experiment with 10,817 participants, the FCA found that informing consumers that cryptoassets are regulated increased demand, yet many participants continued to misunderstand that they lacked certain protections. The phrase compliance-first is powerful, which is exactly why it must not be stretched over a product that carries different risk.

As for evidence on losses, we looked and did not find a study of leveraged crypto trading by retail customers with a stated sample. The nearest is a Bank for International Settlements bulletin finding that a majority of crypto app users in nearly all economies made losses, which covers spot holdings and not leverage. Say so if you use it.

Section 05

A tier checklist for exchange marketers

Put the pieces together and the work around Coinbase Advanced and its siblings is practical. Here is a checklist an exchange or fintech marketing team can run before a tiered brand goes live, written for the patient fox who prefers to check the hedgerow before the field.

Five checks before a second tier gets its own name
Name the audience in one line

If a visitor cannot tell within five seconds whether the product is for them, the name is not doing its job.

Split the risk language by product

Give leveraged products their own warnings, never a borrowed footer from the mass-market tier.

Map each promotion to a jurisdiction

Record, per country, what the product may be promoted to whom, and check the rules at the date of launch.

Keep one trust claim honest

Use the reputation for compliance only where it is true for the specific product and place.

Measure each tier separately

Give every tier its own funnel, so the cautious audience's results cannot hide the aggressive audience's.

If you advise a brand that is thinking of tiering itself, our brand strategy practice starts with exactly those five checks, and our fintech marketing clients meet the same questions in cards, lending and savings. For an earlier look at how Coinbase's agent desk was marketed, see our piece on agentic trading as a distribution story.

The week's lesson from Coinbase Advanced and the returning Pro is gentle. A fan chorus is worth listening to, a trust brand is worth protecting, and a second door is worth building only if the people on each side of it know where they are standing. The fox that holds the hedgerow keeps two paths clear: one for the cautious, one for the confident, and a sign at the fork that tells the truth.

Questions

Frequently asked questions

Is there a difference between coinbase and coinbase pro?

Yes. Coinbase's annual report describes Simple trading for consumers who prioritise ease and Advanced trading for sophisticated traders. Coinbase announced in 2022 that it would sunset Pro, and now says Pro returns by year-end alongside a Deribit-based Global Exchange. Details of the relaunched product are not yet published.

What is Coinbase Advanced?

Coinbase Advanced is the trading experience Coinbase describes as offering access to spot and derivatives order books, real-time market information through interactive charts and a live trade history. It is aimed at traders who want more features than the Simple interface offers, and Coinbase Advanced is the tier a returning Pro would sit beside.

What does the Coinbase Deribit deal change?

Coinbase says it is connecting US and international derivatives markets into a single liquidity pool, with leverage of up to 10x on selected major assets and 5x on others, and US retail access to options coming later this year. The CFTC staff interpretation of 29 May 2026 enabled the connection.

How much did Coinbase pay for Deribit?

It depends on the date. The price announced at signing in August 2025 was about $2.9 billion, as CryptoBriefing reports, while Coinbase's FY2025 annual report puts total purchase consideration at $4.3 billion after its share price moved. Quote the figure with its date.

What are the UK rules for promoting crypto leverage trading?

UK crypto promotions must meet the FCA's regime, which includes clear risk warnings, a ban on incentives to invest, client categorisation and appropriateness assessments. The FCA also banned the sale, marketing and distribution of certain crypto derivatives to retail consumers in 2020. Check current scope with counsel.

Can crypto exchanges call themselves compliance-first?

Only where it is true for the specific product and place. An FCA experiment with 10,817 participants found that telling people crypto is regulated increased demand, yet many still misunderstood that they lacked certain protections, so a compliance claim must not stretch over riskier products.
