Google Ads Search Campaigns, built on real intent#
Quick answer: Google Ads search campaigns put your offer beside the exact queries buyers type, the moment they type them, and you pay only when someone clicks through.

What is a search campaign?#
A search campaign is a set of text ads bought at auction to appear on Google results pages. You choose the queries you want to show against, write the ads, and set the most a click is worth to you. The impression itself is free; you pay only when someone clicks.
That price is set by the auction, not a rate card. Varian's analysis of Google's position auction found observed click prices match Nash equilibrium predictions reasonably accurately, which is why google ads search campaigns reward relevance as much as budget. How the auction decides#
Google runs a generalised second-price auction: the winner pays just enough to beat the advertiser below, not their full bid. Edelman, Ostrovsky and Schwarz showed that, unlike the classic Vickrey design, bidding your true value is not an equilibrium strategy, so bids need active management.
Position is never bought outright. Ad rank blends your bid with quality signals such as expected clickthrough and landing page experience, so a sharper ad can sit above a richer one.

When search pays, and when it does not
Search earns its keep capturing demand that already exists. Someone types "emergency boiler repair" and you meet them mid-decision. That high-intent moment is what Google Ads search campaigns are built for.
The waste hides on your own name. Large-scale field experiments at eBay found brand-keyword ads delivered no measurable short-term benefit, because those clickers were on their way to you anyway.
Little existing demand to capture? Look at Performance Max instead.
Where your ad actually shows
Win the auction and your ad appears above or below the organic results, marked Sponsored. Top slots take most of the clicks; the bottom of the page catches determined scrollers.
Position is not everything. Ghose and Yang's model of six months of retailer keyword data shows click-through rate, conversion rate, cost per click and rank moving together as one system, so the dearest slot is rarely the most profitable one.
Your ads can also run on Search Partners, a network of non-Google search sites you can switch off in campaign settings.
Why run search at all?
The test that matters is incrementality: count only the sales that would not have happened without the ad. The eBay experiments found returns from paid search were a fraction of conventional non-experimental estimates under that lens.
That is not a case against search, it is a case for measuring it. Google Ads search campaigns pay where organic cannot reach yet: new markets, competitor terms, pages that do not rank. Pair them with SEO and GEO so paid fills gaps rather than buying clicks you already earn.
Know your ceiling first: the break-even cpc calculator on the hub shows the most a click can cost before it loses money.
Search Intent Mapper
Paste a raw keyword list and sort it into buying, comparison, research, brand and irrelevant tiers before it reaches your Google Ads search campaigns. The rules are plain word lists, shown in full, and you can overrule any row.

Feed the irrelevant tier straight into your negative keyword list, then let the search terms report show whether junk queries still trigger your ads. This tool never invents search volumes or costs: for estimated monthly searches, use Keyword Planner.
One keyword, three behaviours #
Broad, phrase and exact read the same searches very differently. Simulate all three against your own examples before your google ads search campaigns spend anything.
Match Type Simulator
A simulation of how the documented match types behave using transparent word overlap rules, never a prediction of what Google will actually serve. Runs entirely in your browser; nothing you type leaves this page.
The only place to see the searches that really triggered your ads is the search terms report in your account.
Negative keyword conflict finder#
In Google Ads search campaigns, one stray negative can silence a whole ad group with no warning. Paste both lists and this checker names every clash, with the blocking rule spelt out.

One keyword per line. Wrap a line in [square brackets] for exact match, in "straight quotes" for phrase match, or leave it bare for broad match.
- A broad match negative blocks a positive when every one of its words appears in the positive, in any order.
- A phrase match negative blocks a positive when its words appear in the positive in the same order, side by side.
- An exact match negative blocks a positive only when the two match word for word.
- Negative keywords do not use close variants, so plurals and misspellings count as different words. Each positive keyword's own text is tested as though it were a search query.
Feed this tool from Google's search terms report, where irrelevant queries become negatives, then ask our PPC team to make the pruning a habit.
