The primer

What is Meta Ads and why does creative win?

Most marketers treat Meta as a boosting button with a bigger budget. That assumption leaves margin on the table. Behind the interface sits a 196.2 billion dollar ad business, up 22 per cent in 2025, reaching 3.6 billion daily people across Facebook, Instagram, Messenger and the Audience Network, with Advantage+ shopping alone past a 10 billion dollar quarterly run rate.

The auction rule: Meta runs an auction where total value decides delivery: bid times estimated action rate times ad quality. New ad sets need roughly 50 optimisation events in 7 days to leave learning, so budget comes from expected CPA, not habit. Broad Advantage+ audiences with strong creative now beat sliced interest stacks in most prospecting.

The proprietary Meta edge
  • Andromeda retrieval: the auction retrieves from vast candidate pools using bid, estimated action rate and ad quality, so creative diversity directly widens delivery.
  • Shopping momentum: Boden cut purchase cost 24 per cent with deeper catalogues, and Domino's Spain reported 2.1 times ROAS on Advantage+ Sales with catalogue activity (both Meta-published cases).
  • The Reels shift: Reels passed a 50 billion dollar annual revenue run rate, and vertical sound-on creative reports 4.8 per cent lower CPA with 5.1 per cent higher CTR (Meta disclosure, not a clean ratio test).

How do you exit the learning phase?

Meta needs about 50 optimisation events per ad set in 7 days before delivery stabilises. Budget comes from expected CPA: daily budget times 7 divided by CPA must clear 50.

The learning law: fund the event volume first, judge second, and treat Learning Limited as a budget verdict, not a creative one.

If the maths does not work, consolidate ad sets, broaden the audience or optimise temporarily to a higher-volume event. Significant edits restart learning, so batch changes weekly.

Should Advantage+ drive, or should you?

Advantage+ shopping crossed a 10 billion dollar quarterly run rate, yet in one 640-test panel most brands won incremental ROAS on manual. Neither side always wins.

The automation law: run Advantage+ where signal is rich, keep manual where control pays, and re-test the loser every quarter.

Hybrids usually win the middle: Advantage+ prospecting with manual retargeting, or manual prospecting feeding an Advantage+ scale campaign. Set the re-test date when you set the structure.

Why does Pixel plus CAPI come before bidding?

Browser signal alone leaks through blockers and consent refusals. Seventeen standard events, one shared event ID across Pixel and CAPI, and deduplication switched on: that is the whole foundation.

The signal law: Pixel plus CAPI together, validated in Events Manager, before a single pound of conversion budget.

Verify the live account for AEM slot behaviour before promising event priority, and complete domain verification by DNS, file or meta tag. CAPI does not bypass consent law.

What makes Meta creative earn the auction?

The auction weighs estimated action rate, so creative diversity directly widens delivery. Vary the concept, hook, proof and format, not the button colour.

The diversification law: 20 plus diversified ads, 20 to 30 per cent of budget in test, weekly review of winners and fatigue.

Front-load the brand and hook inside 3 seconds, caption everything for sound-off, and audit Advantage+ Creative defaults before they ship. Fatigue is expected; refresh on CPA decay.

How much Meta budget is enough, honestly?

There is no universal floor, only event maths: 50 events per ad set per week at your expected CPA sets the minimum. Below that you buy anecdotes, not evidence.

The consolidation law: one funded ad set beats five starved ones, and daily budgets average across the week to 75 per cent over.

No universal 20 per cent edit rule exists in Meta docs; treat big budget jumps as significant edits and judge cost goals weekly, not daily.

How does B2B win on a consumer platform?

Job titles are noisy and professional targeting is weaker than elsewhere, so lead with first-party lists, qualified-lead lookalikes and broad delivery with strong creative.

The list law: customers first, lookalikes second, interests third, titles last, with CRM feedback closing the loop.

Never benchmark Meta CPL against professional-platform CPL; the identity systems differ. Judge on qualified pipeline, opportunity rate and revenue per account.

Fox Field Guide · 07

How do local advertisers win on Meta?

Store sets with localised creative, radius targeting around real catchments, and offline conversions closing the loop between ad and till.

The catchment law: budget by store economics, weight to trading calendars, and judge on incremental store sales, not clicks.

Store Traffic is migrating away in some accounts, so build on Awareness with store features where the objective is absent. The old Store Sales optimisation was removed in 2022.

Fox Field Guide · 08

How do catalogues hunt on Meta?

Advantage+ catalogue matches feed products to shoppers for prospecting and retargeting. Product IDs in events must match catalogue IDs exactly, or measurement quietly lies.

The feed law: fresh feeds, matched IDs, product sets by margin and stock, with Shopify or the official channel keeping catalogue and pixel in sync.

Catalogue creative handles relevance, but prospecting creative must still explain why the product is worth buying. Report contribution ROAS with new versus existing customers split out.

Fox Field Guide · 09

Instant Forms or landing pages?

Instant Forms win on mobile completion speed; landing pages win where the proposition needs explaining. In one practitioner test Instant leads cost 2.04 dollars against 3.77 dollars for web, but the CRM is the only judge that counts.

The quality law: budget to qualified lead or opportunity cost, pre-qualify in the creative, and sync the CRM before you scale.

Conversion Leads optimisation with CRM feedback cut quality CPL 15 per cent in Meta-reported testing. Higher-intent form types and SMS verification trade volume for validity.

Fox Field Guide · 10

How do you measure Meta honestly?

The default window is 7-day click plus 1-day view; changing windows moves reported numbers without moving orders. Expect Ads Manager above GA4 and reconcile with the ledger, not with hope.

The incrementality law: platform attribution reports matches, holdouts report causes, and budget follows the holdout.

Run Conversion Lift where spend justifies it, keep one consistent reporting window across platforms, and judge prospecting on blended revenue and new-customer rate.
