How image ads win the Feed
Image ads are the Meta control format: one visual, short copy, hours to launch. This guide covers specs, ratios and the setup that makes them readable.

Meta image ads are single-visual ads in 1:1, 4:5 or 1.91:1 with 125 characters of primary text recommended, a 40-character headline and a 25-character description. They serve across Feed, Stories, Reels and video placements from one asset set.
The spec, exactly#
Feed prefers 4:5 vertical (1440 by 1800 pixels) for maximum screen share, with 1:1 square as the universal fallback that covers every placement. JPG or PNG, 30MB maximum, and resolution at or above 1080 pixels wide keeps text edges crisp on dense phone screens. Meta own image ad specs list every placement crop, so check the ratio you actually buy before exporting.
Copy lengths are recommendations, not hard limits: 125 characters of primary text, 40 for the headline, 25 for the description, with longer text truncated behind a see-more link. Front-load the payoff inside the visible window. Start at the Meta Ads hub for the family view, and read our ratios guide for the coverage maths.
Why static still earns budget#
Static buys the cheapest tests in the account: no shoot, no edit, same-day reads. When the proposition is simple and the proof is visual, one strong image with a plain headline beats a rushed video that nobody finishes.
Use static as the control every motion test must beat. Launch each concept as image first, then promote winners into video and Reels cuts. Diversification explains why concepts, not formats, do the heavy lifting.
Pair each image with a distinct primary text angle, because copy is half the creative on Meta: the same visual with a new hook reads as a new ad to the auction. Hooks transfer from video to static once you write them down first.
Text overlay without tears#
There is no 20 per cent rule any more, but under 20 per cent text still performs better as a finding, not a law. Keep the offer in the primary text and headline fields where Meta renders them natively, and reserve in-image text for the three words that must survive every crop.
The old overlay checker is retired, so judge with your eyes: thumbnail the creative at feed size and read it in two seconds. Our overlay guide has the two-second test.
First-launch setup#
One Sales or Engagement campaign, one ad set with an Advantage+ audience, three to five image variants on one concept, Advantage+ placements switched on. Budget from expected CPA so the ad set can clear roughly 50 events in its first week.
Validate Pixel fires before spending a pound: Pixel setup walks the install, budget from Meta on the learning phase, and our team audits signal free with every engagement.
Reading the first week#
Judge image tests on thumb-stop rate and outbound CTR before CPA: clicks tell you the creative worked, conversions tell you the offer did. Kill the bottom half at 3 to 5 times target CPA with zero conversions, and graduate winners into ratio variants.
Keep a simple kill log with spend, conversions and the reason for each decision; patterns across months teach more than any single test. Revisit losers quarterly, because auctions, audiences and seasons shift what works. Prospecting splits decide where winners graduate next.
Do not touch targeting mid-test; significant edits restart learning and corrupt the read. Our A/B guide sets the clean-read rules.
When image loses#
Image loses where demonstration decides: software flows, physical transformations, anything with a before and after. It also loses where the feed has seen the same visual for a month; fatigue is a schedule, not a surprise.
Rotate concepts every few weeks at scale, sooner on small audiences where frequency climbs fast. Fatigue guide shows the decay curve to watch.
Frequently asked questions#
What size should Meta image ads be?
At least 1080 pixels wide, JPG or PNG to 30MB, in 4:5 for Feed impact or 1:1 for universal coverage.
How much text can an image ad carry?
125 characters of primary text, a 40-character headline and a 25-character description are recommended; longer copy truncates.
Do image ads work for prospecting?
Yes, as the cheapest concept test in the account. Winners graduate into video; losers die cheap.
How many image variants per ad set?
Three to five materially different concepts, not colour swaps. Difference lives in hook, proof and offer.
When should image give way to video?
Where demonstration, proof faces or worn-out CTR demand motion, and where the story needs more than a single frame. Test video against the image control, never into a vacuum.
Can one image cover all placements?
1:1 square covers everything acceptably, but 4:5 wins Feed and 9:16 wins Reels. Shoot the master, then reframe.
