Microsoft Search Ads, built on real intent#

Quick answer: Microsoft Ads search campaigns put your offer beside the exact queries buyers type across Bing, Yahoo, AOL, DuckDuckGo and Copilot, the moment they type them, and you pay only when someone clicks through.

The what

What is a Microsoft search campaign?#

A Microsoft search campaign is a set of text ads bought at auction to appear on Microsoft Advertising search results. You choose the queries you want to show against, write the ads, and set the most a click is worth to you. The impression itself is free; you pay only when someone clicks.

That price is set by the auction, not a rate card. Varian's analysis of position auctions found observed click prices match equilibrium predictions, which is why relevance matters as much as budget. Start at the Microsoft Ads hub for the full picture.

The how

How the auction decides#

Microsoft Advertising runs a real-time auction where your rank equals your bid multiplied by your Quality Score, a 1 to 10 rating built from expected clickthrough, ad relevance, and landing page experience. Lower advertiser density than Google means typical costs per click run 30 to 60 per cent cheaper.

The audience is the differentiator. Roughly half of Bing searchers sit in the top quartile of household income, and the network skews desktop and office hours. Layer in LinkedIn profile targeting and the same keyword can mean one thing to a consumer at 8pm and another to a procurement director at 10am, with bid modifiers from -90% to +900% by company, industry, and job function.

The judgement call

When search pays, and when it does not#

Run Microsoft search when demand already exists and you can name the query. Bing volume is smaller than Google, roughly one eighth of it, but commercial intent density on desktop is higher, which suits B2B, finance, legal, software, and high-consideration offers.

Skip it when your category has no search language yet, or when the marginal CPC saved does not cover the extra account to manage. The syndicated partner question matters too: website exclusions decide whether partner traffic pays for itself or leaks.

The territory

Where your ad actually shows#

Search ads serve on Bing.com, Yahoo, AOL, and Ecosia results, inside Windows Search and the Edge address bar, and inside Copilot conversational search. Syndicated search partners such as DuckDuckGo extend reach further, and each placement reports separately in the Website URL (publisher) report.

Distribution is controllable: the entire network, Microsoft sites and select traffic, or a curated partner set, with up to 2,500 domain-level website exclusions.

The honest case

Why run search at all?#

Because it is the only inventory where the buyer announces intent in their own words. On Microsoft, you pay less per click for a wealthier, more senior, desktop-first audience than anywhere else at the same moment of intent.

The honest caveat: scale is smaller, so treat Microsoft search as a high-margin second engine rather than a Google replacement. Most folkfox accounts run both, with LinkedIn modifiers only possible here.
