How carousel ads work on Reddit
Carousels turn one promoted post into a sequenced argument of up to six cards. This guide covers specs, placement, sequencing and the MeUndies lift evidence.

Reddit carousel ads hold 2 to 6 image or GIF cards under one headline, with each card able to link to its own destination. They serve in feed and conversation, support Awareness, Traffic, Conversions, App Installs and Catalog Sales, but not Lead Generation.
The spec, exactly#
Square cards at 1200 by 1200 pixels or portrait 3:4 at 1080 by 1440, kept consistent across the set. Reddit rebuilt conversation inventory so users can view and click every card rather than only the first, and landscape assets may display uncropped. Reddit carousel specifications hold the current detail; the carousel deck shows the strategy.
Sequencing a sale#
Order cards as an argument: hook, proof, range, price, action. Product ranges, feature comparisons, tutorials and multi-step offers fit; a single hero asset does not, and a one-card carousel is a promoted post in costume. MeUndies ran promoted carousels through a conversion-lift study reporting double-digit lifts to visits, carts and purchases, which shows what sequenced consideration can do with measurement behind it.
Conversation rendering#
The rebuilt conversation unit exposes all cards, so the same unit meets browsers and researchers. Design for the small thumbnail beside live threads: simple, clean, minimally text-heavy visuals that read at a glance. Preview at thread size before launch, because busy cards die beside live discussion. See conversation placement for thumbnail rules.
The lead-gen gap#
Reddit own comparison excludes Lead Generation for carousels. If the goal is native-form capture, run the dedicated lead generation format instead of forcing a carousel to do a job it cannot take. For everything consideration-shaped, carousels remain the strongest mid-funnel unit. Format alternatives are mapped in the hub primer.
When carousels win#
Ecommerce consideration, multi-product stories, education in steps. Fund the photography before the format: six mediocre cards convert worse than one strong image. Test the carousel against an image control with the same audience and budget, judge after the standard creative window, and scale the winner into adjacent community pods. Category context: Reddit carousel page.
Putting carousels into practice#
Build one five-card sequence this week: hook card, proof card, range cards, price card, action card. Traffic it into the consideration cluster beside the image control, judge on view-content and add-to-cart lift as well as CTR, and read card-level drop-off if the platform exposes it. Sequence quality shows in the middle cards, not the first.
Repurpose the winner into free-form depth (expand the sequence into a teardown) and DPA prospecting (feed the products). One good sequence supplies a quarter of content. Sequencing: consideration carousels and free-form guide.
