Your best content does not live on your website any more
Google quietly gave every marketer a report for the content they publish somewhere else. It is the first Search Console property you can verify without owning a website, and it fixes a blind spot most measurement decks still pretend does not exist.

What rolled out on 29 July#

A fox does not only hunt the field it sleeps in. Most marketing measurement does exactly that, and last week Google handed everyone a map of the neighbouring ground.
Platform properties became available to everyone on 29 July 2026, reported by Search Engine Land. A platform property lets you track how your posts on Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube perform on Google Search, Google Discover and Google News. The same day, Google logged a new guide on assessing social and video content performance in its Search Central documentation updates.
The structural novelty is easy to miss and hard to overstate. Every Search Console property until now required you to prove you controlled a domain. This one does not, which as Search Engine Journal notes makes it usable even by creators who have no website at all.
Three reports, and what each is for#
Each platform property carries three reporting sections, and they answer genuinely different questions rather than repeating one another in different colours.
| Report | What it shows | The question it answers |
|---|---|---|
| Performance | Total clicks, impressions and related metrics, with filtering, sorting and export | Which posts and queries actually earn search traffic |
| Insights | Recent traffic patterns, most successful posts, and how users find your account on Google | What is working, and how people arrive |
| Achievements | Progress toward milestones, such as passing a click threshold within 28 days | Whether the trend is going the right way |

Setup is unusually painless. Open Search Console, use the property selector, choose Add property, pick the platform, and follow the prompts to authorise the connection. Four platforms, a few minutes, no developer required.
For anyone who has spent years arguing that social media seo was real work rather than decoration, this is the receipt. The trail your posts leave through Search was always there. Until last week nobody outside Google could follow it.
Google laid the scent three weeks before the global switch. The Google Search Central Blog announced the property type on 7 July 2026 in a post titled "See how content from social and video platforms performs on Google Search", naming the same four platforms.
On 29 July the Google Search Central Blog confirmed platform properties were globally available to everyone and shipped a companion guide to reading social and video performance. Search Engine Journal clocked the global switch at three weeks after the staged rollout began, which is brisk for a Search Console feature.
One snag before you start. PPC Land notes there is no bulk-import mechanism described, so anyone minding several accounts repeats the setup property by property. Tedious, but tedious once, and teams running social media seo across a client roster should block an afternoon for it.
Why this matters more than it sounds#
A new report in a familiar tool is not usually news. This one is, because it closes a measurement gap that has been quietly widening for two years while most reporting stayed pointed at the wrong place entirely.
The 2026 State of AI Search report from AirOps, published in December 2025 with Kevin Indig and built on millions of datapoints, found that about 48% of citations come from community platforms such as Reddit and YouTube, and that 85% of brand mentions originate on external pages rather than owned content. Brands were 6.5 times more likely to be cited through third-party sources than through their own domain.
Sit with the top bar for a moment. If 85% of the mentions your brand earns happen somewhere you do not own, then a measurement stack built entirely on your own domain is reporting on the smaller share of your visibility and calling it the whole picture. That is the quarry social media seo has been chasing without a torch.
That is the gap platform properties start to close. Not completely, since Reddit is not on the list and neither is LinkedIn, but four of the largest off-domain surfaces now report into the same tool as your website. Social media seo stops being a separate conversation held in a separate dashboard with numbers nobody trusts.
The evidence beneath social media seo#
A launch is a headline. A pattern across the research is a trail, and this trail has been widening since 2025 while most measurement decks stared at the den door. The research is what turns a new Search Console tab from a feature note into a reason to move budget.
Start with page types. Conductor, drawing on 13,770 domains, more than 3.3 billion sessions and over 100 million citations, ranked the five page types most likely to be cited in AI Overviews as blog content, video content, article content, news content and product pages. Video sits second, ahead of the news and product pages most content calendars still lead with.
AI Overview appearance rate
Of 21.9 million Google searches sampled, 5.5 million returned an AI Overview.
AI referrals, share of site traffic
AI referral traffic averaged just over one per cent of total website traffic.
Of those referrals, from ChatGPT
One assistant supplies the overwhelming majority of AI referral traffic.
The citation layer has a shape, and it is not a shape most brand sites sit in. Semrush sampled 230,000 prompts and over 100 million citations across thirteen weekly snapshots from 14 July to 12 October 2025, and found Google AI Mode's most cited domains were LinkedIn, YouTube, Reddit, Google and Google Blog. A separate Semrush study of 248,000 Reddit URLs cited in AI answers found engagement is a poor predictor of visibility: 80% of cited posts have fewer than 20 upvotes, and 70% have fewer than 20 comments.
Freshness is only half the fox's problem. Pew Research Center observed 68,879 Google searches by 900 US adults in March 2025 and found people clicked a traditional result on 8% of visits where an AI summary appeared, against 15% of visits where none did, and clicked a link inside the summary on just 1%. Wikipedia, YouTube and Reddit were the three most commonly linked sources, 15% of the sources listed in AI summaries and a similar 17% in ordinary results. Where attention actually settles is not your homepage, which is exactly the ground social media seo works.
What platform properties cannot see#
Now the mechanics, because the limits matter as much as the launch. Search Console Help documents the Performance report as total clicks, impressions, average click-through rate and average search position across Google Search, Discover and Google News, with the Discover and News reports appearing only where content actually earns traffic from those surfaces, and a default date range of 28 days for both Insights and Performance. What you get in return is query-level reporting for content published outside your own website, which Search Engine Journal calls the thing no platform dashboard has ever handed over.
What to actually measure in social media seo#
The risk with any new report is that it becomes a screenshot in a monthly deck rather than a decision. Three questions are worth building the routine around, and all three are answerable from day one.
First, which queries bring people to your social posts. The Performance report shows queries, which means you can finally see the search intent your video answered, rather than guessing from the platform's own vaguer analytics. That is content marketing measurement with a real query behind it, and it turns social media seo from an argument into a spreadsheet.
Second, which formats earn search visibility rather than in-platform engagement. Video SEO stops being a separate craft the moment the same report covers your website and your channel. Anyone who has done TikTok SEO on instinct now has a number to argue with. These are different outcomes and they frequently disagree. A post can perform modestly in-feed and consistently well in Search, and until now nothing told you so. Most social media seo advice was written without access to that distinction.
Third, which posts are decaying. This is where the freshness evidence bites hardest.
The AirOps research found pages not updated quarterly are three times more likely to lose citations, with over 70% of cited pages updated within twelve months and more than 60% refreshed within six months on commercial queries. Decay is measurable, predictable and therefore preventable.
One structural finding worth acting on today#
The same report found pages using sequential headings correlated with 2.8 times higher citation rates, and that 87% of cited pages used a single H1. That is an unglamorous finding and a cheap fix, and it applies to your website long before it applies to your video descriptions.
Good content marketing has always been part structure and part substance. The evidence now says the structure is doing more work than most teams credit it with.
Google published a recipe book for exactly this work, and almost nobody has opened it. Google Search Central sets out three specific moves inside the Performance report, and each one answers a question teams have been arguing about from vibes for a decade.
Building the monthly routine#
Connect the properties this week, then leave them alone for a month. Search Console data needs time to accumulate before it says anything trustworthy, and a report read on day three will mislead you about everything.
Add Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube as platform properties, even the ones you post to rarely. The cost is minutes and a dormant property still gathers a baseline.
A Delta playbook from Search Engine Land covers the staged July 7-29 rollout timeline, with named Google staff attribution.
Resist reading anything conclusive for four weeks. The Achievements report uses a 28 day window, which is a reasonable hint about the shortest honest reporting period.
Export the query data from the Performance report. Queries tell you what intent your content satisfied, which is the part platform analytics has never been able to show you.
Rank your posts by search performance rather than in-feed engagement, and note where the two lists disagree. The disagreements are where the strategy is hiding.
Update the posts and pages carrying real search visibility at least every quarter, since content left longer is three times more likely to lose citations.
Domain in, everything else guessed
Website sessions from Search Console, social numbers pulled from four separate platform dashboards with four separate definitions of a view, and no way to tell which posts earned search visibility at all.
One surface, one definition
Clicks, impressions and queries for the website and four social platforms in the same tool, measured the same way, so you can rank all your content by the visibility it actually earned.
The honest caveat belongs here rather than buried at the end. This measures performance on Google surfaces only, so it tells you nothing about in-platform reach, and the platform list omits Reddit and LinkedIn despite Reddit's prominence in the citation data. It is a significant improvement, not a complete answer.
Even so, a partial map beats no map. Anyone doing social media seo has spent years working the undergrowth by feel, and four verified platforms reporting into one tool is the first real light on that ground.
What it changes about content strategy#
The deeper shift is about where effort goes. If most brand visibility happens off your domain, then treating social as a distribution afterthought for website content is precisely backwards. Google Discover has been rewarding that shift for years without telling anyone how. The video is not a trailer for the article. Increasingly it is the thing being cited, which makes social media seo a primary discipline rather than a supporting one.
If 85% of your mentions happen somewhere you do not own, a report about your website is a report about the minority of your brand.
There is a budgeting consequence too, and it is the argument most likely to land in a planning meeting. Off-domain content has always been hard to fund because it was hard to measure, so it lost every budget round to the channels with clean attribution. Platform properties give social media seo a number that survives scrutiny, which is usually all a good idea needs.
Practically, the work sits across two disciplines that should never have been separate. Video SEO and social both resolve to the same question now, which is what the query data answers. That data belongs to SEO and GEO, because it reveals which intents your brand is answering across every surface. The creative decisions belong to paid social and organic teams who now, at last, can see which formats earn search visibility rather than only which ones earn a scroll.
There is a brand strategy consequence hiding in the citation data as well. If platforms are the surfaces being quoted, your brand is increasingly described by somebody else's summary of it, and the only lever you hold is what you publish where those summaries go looking.
So treat the four properties as a standing brief rather than a monthly screenshot. Which intents does the brand answer on each surface, which formats earn the query rather than the scroll, and which posts have gone stale on the trail. Those three questions are the whole of social media seo, and for the first time they have answers you can export.
Start with the four connections and one month of patience, and treat TikTok SEO and Google Discover as reportable channels rather than articles of faith. A fox that learns the whole territory, rather than only the den, is the one that eats through winter, and the territory has been getting larger every year while the map stayed the same size. Treat social media seo as part of that territory and the winter looks a great deal shorter.
Frequently asked questions#
What are Search Console platform properties?
They are a property type in Google Search Console that shows how your posts on Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube perform on Google Search, Discover and Google News. They became available globally on 29 July 2026 and are the first Search Console property you can verify without owning a domain.
Which platforms are supported at launch?
Four: Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube. Notably absent are Reddit and LinkedIn, which matters because Reddit appears prominently in AI search citation data, so the reporting covers a large share of off-domain visibility but not all of it.
How do I set up a platform property?
Open Search Console, use the property selector, choose Add property, select the platform you want, and follow the on-screen instructions to authorise the connection. No developer involvement or domain verification is required, and the whole process takes a few minutes per platform.
Does this show in-platform engagement figures?
No. It reports performance on Google surfaces only, meaning Search, Discover and Google News. Your in-feed views, watch time and follower growth still live in each platform's own analytics, so the two views answer different questions and should be read together.
Huge Search Console update: Businesses worldwide can now track how their Instagram, TikTok, YouTube, and X content performs across Google Search, Discover, and Google News... One important note: This only tracks visibility on Google.
Google is rolling out a new Search Console property type: "platform properties", allowing you to track how your Instagram, TikTok, X and YouTube content performs in Google Search and Discover...
Why does off-domain content matter so much now?
Because most brand visibility happens there. Research from AirOps found 85% of brand mentions originate on third-party pages rather than owned content, and about 48% of citations come from community platforms such as Reddit and YouTube. Measuring only your website reports on the minority.
How often should I refresh content that is earning search visibility?
At least quarterly. The AirOps research found pages not updated quarterly are three times more likely to lose citations, with over 70% of cited pages updated within twelve months and more than 60% refreshed within six months for commercial queries.
Does social media seo change what I publish, or only how I report it?
Both, in that order of importance. Query data tells you which search intents your posts already satisfy, and that rewrites the brief for the next batch. Conductor's 2026 benchmarks put video second only to blog content among the page types most likely to be cited in AI Overviews, so social media seo is a production decision at least as much as a reporting one.
Why does content freshness keep coming up in social media seo advice?
Because citation follows recency. Seer Interactive found nearly 65% of AI crawler log hits were for content published within the past year and only 6% for content older than six years, and a controlled reranking study found language models promote passages carrying fresher dates even when relevance is identical. Refreshing what already works beats publishing something new.
