Zero click searches now pay a tenth of one percent

Summarise with

Google has started paying about 100 websites for AI answers, and the cheque is small enough to count in pennies. The sharper question is what a citation earns when the click has gone.

Quick answerZero click searches now carry a payment: Google's pilot reportedly pays about 100 publishers roughly 0.1% of ad revenue. Treat it as a signal, and measure cited share, click rate and impressions instead.
Section 01

Zero click searches meet the pennies#

A fox does not wait at an empty burrow. When the trail runs cold, it asks where the quarry went and what the field is paying for the hunt. Search has reached that moment. On 30 September, Ars Technica reported that Google's early attempt to pay websites for AI answers is struggling, relaying a report from The Information: about 100 publishers have been admitted to an AI contribution pilot, and several small and mid-sized ones said the payments equal roughly one-tenth of one percent of their advertising revenue.

Zero click searches, the queries that end on the results page without a visit, used to be a worry for publishers and a footnote for everyone else. Now they come with a cheque, and the cheque is slight. Some sites are doing well: Ars says one early joiner is on track to earn more than $1 million a year, and a more recent addition has earned $50,000 to $60,000. Various smaller sites, though, are seeing less than $1,000 over several months. The Decoder's summary of the same report gives the same ranges.

Zero click searches are not only a publisher's problem. You may not run a newsroom, and the arithmetic still reaches your den. A brand's pages are the sources AI Overviews draw on too, so the same pair of questions governs both of you: when the click is gone and the payment is pennies, what is a citation worth, and how would you ever know? What follows is the click loss, the worth of a citation, and what to measure and ask for. For whether the answers are accurate in the first place, our WashU audit piece has the count.

1%

of visits to a results page with an AI summary ended in a click on a link inside the summary

Pew Research Center, 2025

That single percentage comes from Pew Research Center, which tracked the browsing of 900 American adults during March 2025. It is old by the standards of this field, so date it in your head: this is the spring 2025 baseline, not a September 2026 reading. Even so, it sets the scale for everything that follows. If the summary is where the visit ends, the summary is also where the money goes, and a payment of pennies is the price of zero click searches rather than the replacement for the lost visit.

Google's own account is more cheerful. In an August 2025 post, Liz Reid wrote that total organic click volume from Google Search to websites has been relatively stable year-over-year, and that the clicks that do arrive are higher in quality. Both things can be true of an aggregate while one publisher's own trail runs cold, which is why the useful number is always your own.

AI overview revenue: what the pilot pays, and why nobody can plan on it#

  • $1m+

  • $50-60k

earned by a more recent joiner

  • <$1,000

  • 0.1%

of ad revenue, several small and mid-sized publishers

Read the four figures as a spread, never an average. They cover different periods (a year, a few months, to date), different sites and different topics, so they cannot be added up or divided into a typical cheque. What they do show is that AI overview revenue, to date, is a lottery with a long tail: a handful of sites do well, and most take home a sum that a good week of display advertising would swallow whole. All four figures are as reported by The Information, relayed by Ars Technica, not published by Google.

The pitch itself is not new. In June 2026 Google described piloting a new way to partner with websites whose content meaningfully contributes to the freshness and factuality of generative AI responses through the process of grounding. Ars adds that payments go to sites whose content materially contributes to Gemini-powered search results such as an AI Overview, and that topics with strong niche interest but thinner coverage, anime and gaming among them, seem to earn more. Several larger publishers have reportedly declined to join, hoping that a refusal forces a richer offer.

A rate card you cannot read is not a rate card.

The sharpest complaint is not the size but the opacity. According to Ars, publishers in the pilot find month-to-month tracking in Search Console confusing, and it is unclear what counts as a meaningful contribution, so future earnings are impossible to plan. A payment nobody can explain cannot sit in a budget. Anyone drawing up a plan for next year should treat AI overview revenue as a signal of where Google values a page, never as income to be forecast.

Our earlier piece on AI overview tracking and the contribution pilot covered how the pilot first surfaced. What is new this week is the price, and the price changes the advice. When the cheque was a rumour, tracking was the sensible hedge. Now that it is a number, tracking is the only part of the exercise you control.

Section 03

AI overview impact: what a vanished click looks like in the numbers#

Start with the click, because the payment is measured against it. Three datasets give three readings of zero click searches, and none of them is the same measure, so hold them loosely. Pew found that users who met an AI summary clicked a traditional result link in 8% of visits, against 15% for users who did not. MailOnline's own SEO team shared figures showing desktop click through rates falling from 13% to 4.6%, and mobile from 20% to 6.8%, when an overview sat above its results, as Blue Ocean Media reported on 28 September; treat that as one publisher's account rather than a market finding.

Ahrefs, a vendor with its own interest in the question, compared 150,000 keywords that trigger an AI Overview with 150,000 informational keywords that do not, using aggregated Search Console data. Its December 2025 reading, headlined AI Overviews reduce clicks by 58%, is that an overview correlates with a 58% lower average click through rate for the top-ranking page. Three measures, three samples, one direction. That is the AI overview impact in a sentence: where a summary appears, the click rate roughly halves or worse.

In every dataset the click rate falls by roughly half or more once an AI summary appears. The measures differ (all visits, one publisher, two devices), so read the direction, not the gap.

Pew's 15% falling to 8% is about 47% fewer result clicks, and MailOnline's desktop slide is about 65% fewer, on our arithmetic from the published figures. Set that against a payment of a tenth of one percent of advertising revenue and the shape is plain. The pilot is not a swap of traffic for money. It is a separate, much smaller meter running beside a falling one, and zero click searches are what keep it falling.

Regulators have noticed the same gap. On 3 June 2026 the Competition and Markets Authority imposed a conduct requirement under its digital markets regime: in what it called a world first, publishers will be able to prevent their content being used to power AI features in Google search, content must be attributed with clear links in AI-generated results, and Google has nine months to implement the changes, with compliance reports every six months for the first year.

The CMA adds that it may bring forward further measures to ensure a fair exchange of value. In Brussels, the European Commission opened an antitrust investigation in December 2025 into whether AI Overviews and AI Mode rely on publishers' content without appropriate compensation, as CNBC reported.

Control is already arriving for those worried about zero click searches. Google's help pages say that as of 31 August 2026 the Search generative AI control has rolled out worldwide, letting a property include or exclude its content from AI Overviews, AI Mode and generative features in Discover. Excluding means no impressions or traffic from those features, which is the point of the next section: before you pull a lever, know what the citation is worth.

A brand cited in an AI Overview kept about a third more organic clicks than one left out, though Seer says it cannot prove that citation causes it. Seer Interactive, Q3 2025.

This is the best evidence yet on what AI overview sources are worth to the brands they name. Seer Interactive tracked 3,119 informational search terms across 42 client organisations, 25.1 million organic impressions in all, from June 2024 to September 2025. Where an overview appeared and the brand was cited, organic click through rate was 0.70%, against 0.52% where the brand was missing and 1.45% where no overview appeared. In Seer's words, being cited meant 35% more organic clicks and 91% more paid clicks than not being cited at all.

The caveat is Seer's own. It states plainly that it cannot prove citation causes the higher click rate: brands with stronger authority and higher baseline click rates may simply be likelier to be cited. The finding is a correlation with a sensible mechanism, and a vendor's client data at that. Even so, it supplies the missing price. A citation does not restore the click; it softens the fall, and across 10,000 impressions the gap between 0.70% and 0.52% is 18 clicks, our arithmetic on Seer's rates. Small, yes. Larger than the pilot's pennies, for most brands, also yes, because zero click searches make every kept click count.

The next change is closer to home. On 30 September, Search Engine Roundtable reported that Google is showing AI Overviews for many large brand names. Chris Long wrote on X that 93% of the brands he tested, about 100 in all, produced an overview, and Barry Schwartz added a note from DemandSphere that AI Overviews on branded queries tripled in September. Most appeared below the main company result rather than above it, and Google itself and news publications were the exceptions.

That is a small sample, reported by practitioners, so call it a smoke signal rather than a survey. Still, a search for your own name now carries an AI answer about you, built from sources you did not pick.

I always thought if the site is good, relevant and follows SEO best practices, it would show up in AI answers anyway.
30 September 2026, r/SEOView on Reddit

That practitioner's instinct is half right, and the half matters. Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear in AI Overviews or AI Mode, and no special extras are needed beyond ordinary good practice. There is no markup to add and no file to publish. The prowl for AI overview sources is won the old way: pages that state a fact once, plainly, with the evidence beside it, on a site that earns its links. What changes is the measuring, which is where the other half of that Reddit post goes.

Section 05

How to measure AI visibility when the click is gone#

So, how to measure AI visibility when zero click searches rule the results page? No single meter does all five jobs. Google now gives site owners a first-party dial: the generative AI performance report in Search Console, rolled out to all sites worldwide on 31 August 2026, shows impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode by page, country and device. Impressions are how often links to your site were shown, which is useful and incomplete. It does not show payments, and Search Engine Journal noted that help pages still say not every property has access.

Pair that dial with three of your own. Log the click rate on your money questions with and without an overview present, which is Seer's split applied to your own data. Check what an AI Overview says when someone searches your brand name, weekly, with a screenshot and a date. And track the sources: which of your pages are cited, and which rivals sit beside them. That is the practical meaning of AI overview sources for a buyer: a short, dated ledger of who is quoted for the questions that make you money.

Five meters for a world of zero click searches, one question each. None needs special markup, and none is a payment.

Then there is what to ask for. If you are one of the roughly 100 invited, or negotiating with any platform that wants your pages, the asks follow from the complaints above. A per-page statement of which pages contributed, so earnings can be explained. A written definition of a meaningful contribution. A calculation method that does not change without notice. And the right to step out of AI features, which the CMA's requirement is set to give UK publishers within nine months. Without those four, a cheque is a gift, and a gift cannot be budgeted.

What to do about zero click searches comes down to two cases. If your pages are cited and your click rate is falling, the work is to make each citation count: a clear claim, a clear source, a page worth the visit. If you run a publisher's den, the work is to keep the receipts, because the first negotiator with a clean ledger sets the rate.

For a buyer, the quiet prowl beats the loud panic: measure the gap, name the sources, and spend where a citation pays back. Our AI visibility work starts from exactly that ledger, with content marketing and brand strategy close behind it. For the publisher-side view of the same squeeze, read the publishers' playbook. And if you want the numbers read for your own queries, start a conversation.

Questions

Frequently asked questions#

What are zero click searches?

Zero click searches are queries that end on the results page without a visit to any website, because the answer is already shown there. With AI summaries, zero click searches are climbing: Pew found users clicked a traditional result in 8% of visits with a summary and 15% without, and clicked a link inside the summary in just 1%.

How much AI overview revenue does Google's pilot pay publishers?

Very little for most. The Information reported, via Ars Technica, that several small and mid-sized publishers receive roughly 0.1% of their advertising revenue, some smaller sites under $1,000 over several months, while one early joiner is on track for more than $1 million a year. Google has not published a rate.

What is the AI overview impact on click through rates?

Large and negative where a summary appears. Pew measured 15% falling to 8% of visits with a result click, Ahrefs found a 58% lower click rate for the top-ranking page, and MailOnline's SEO team cited desktop falling from 13% to 4.6%. The measures differ, so read the direction, not the exact gap.

Where do AI overview sources come from?

From a wide field of pages that Google's systems judge useful for the answer. Google's documentation says there are no additional requirements to appear. Seer found brands cited in an overview kept 35% more organic clicks than uncited ones, though it cannot prove citation is the cause.

How to measure AI visibility when clicks fall?

When zero click searches rise, use several meters, not one. Search Console's generative AI performance report counts impressions in AI Overviews and AI Mode. Add click rate with and without an overview, a weekly check of what an overview says about your brand, and a dated ledger of which pages are cited for your money questions.

Should a brand join the pilot or opt out of AI features?

Only with a clear view of what a citation is worth to you. Excluding your site from Search generative AI features removes impressions and traffic from them, per Google's help page. Measure your cited click rate first, and if you are invited to the pilot, ask for per-page statements and a written definition of a contribution.
