Apple put ads on the map, then drew a fence around them

A new local inventory source arrived on Friday with a billion monthly searches behind it and a policy page that quietly decides who is allowed near it. The fence matters more than the frontage.

Quick answerApple Maps ads launched for US and Canadian businesses on 14 August 2026, in two placements: Suggested Places before a search, and promoted pins after one. Apple's Maps-specific rules prohibit home services, bail bonds and crypto ATMs.
SECTION 01

What Apple actually shipped on Friday#

apple maps ads

The fox does not bolt at the first rustle in the hedgerow. It waits, watches, and works out which way the wind is walking. That patient prowl is the right posture for apple maps ads, because the announcement and the policy underneath it tell two different stories.

On 14 August 2026, businesses in the United States and Canada could begin buying inventory inside Apple Maps. Apple's own Ads on Maps page is unusually plain about the geography: "Ads on Apple Maps are available in the United States and Canada. Only advertisers with businesses in those countries are eligible."

There are two placements, and they sit either side of the search box. Before a search, ads appear in Suggested Places, which Apple describes as reaching customers "just as customers begin exploring". After a search, promoted business pins carry a place card into the results.

Where apple maps ads sit inside the Apple Ads account#

Maps inventory did not arrive as a separate product. It sits in the same account that already sells App Store placements, so anyone who has run apple search ads will recognise the machinery immediately. Apple's App Store advertising page lists four placements there, the Today Tab, Search Tab, Search Results and Product Pages, and prices them on cost-per-tap: "Pay only when customers engage with your ad."

That shared plumbing decides who buys how. MediaPost reports no minimum media buy, with advertisers able to "start or stop campaigns at any time". Businesses of five or fewer locations purchase through Apple Business automated tools, while larger estates and existing apple search ads advertisers are routed to the Apple Ads platform proper.

The numbers Apple chose to publish#

Apple rarely volunteers audience figures, so the three it does put on that page are worth reading closely. Over a billion relevant business searches happen every month. One in two of those searches ends with the user taking some action. Gen Z and Millennials make up 57% of Maps users.

The three figures Apple published

Monthly business searches

Searches ending in action

0%

Gen Z and Millennial share

0%

Apple's stated share of Maps users from those two cohorts.

That last figure is the quiet one, and it should shape how apple maps ads are briefed. A local inventory source skewed 57% toward two cohorts is not a general-audience buy, it is a demographic instrument, and it should be planned as one.

Apple maps ads did not arrive unannounced. Apple's Apple Ads news feed carried "Get ready for ads on Apple Maps" on 24 March 2026, five months before the doors opened. The scent was on the trail for anyone reading the vendor's own room rather than waiting for the trade press.

SECTION 02

The fence, and who it keeps out#

Here is the part almost every apple maps ads write-up flattened into a single word: banned. Apple's advertising policy, effective 14 July 2026, is more careful than that, and the distinction it draws is the whole commercial story.

The policy is structured in a way the recaps missed entirely. Apple publishes a block headed "Additional Prohibitions for Advertising on Apple Maps", and it contains exactly four clauses, numbered 2.13 to 2.16. Everything else being quoted as a Maps ban is actually a rule that already applied across every Apple advertising surface.

The four Maps-specific clauses are worth reading in Apple's own words. Per Apple's advertising policies, clause 2.13 removes home services: content promoting "plumbing, electrical, locksmith, HVAC, pest control, roofing, or general contracting services, is prohibited."

Clause 2.14 prohibits bail bond and surety bond services related to criminal pretrial release. Clause 2.15 prohibits "ATMs for cryptocurrencies". Clause 2.16 is the one with a door in it: medical services "will be evaluated on a case-by-case basis."

Political advertising is prohibited too, at clause 2.8, but that is a general Apple rule rather than a Maps addition, and it reaches candidates, office holders, parties, organisations, fundraising and ballot initiatives. Gambling sits further down again, in the restricted tier at 3.7, alongside the alcohol restrictions and the cross-service list on Apple's main advertising policies page.

Prohibited is not the same as restricted, and the difference decides whether you can plan a campaign at all.
CategoryStatusWhat that means in practice
Home services (plumbing, HVAC, roofing)Prohibited, Maps-specific (2.13)No campaign is possible. Plan another channel entirely.
Bail and surety bondsProhibited, Maps-specific (2.14)No campaign is possible.
Cryptocurrency ATMsProhibited, Maps-specific (2.15)No campaign is possible.
Medical servicesCase by case, Maps-specific (2.16)Evaluated individually. Budget on the assumption of a wait.
Political candidates, parties, ballot initiativesProhibited, all Apple surfaces (2.8)Not new, and not a Maps rule. Already applied.
Gambling and bettingRestricted, all Apple surfaces (3.7)Permitted with conditions. Brief compliance, do not abandon the channel.
AlcoholRestricted, all Apple surfacesAge-appropriate imagery, disclaimers and scheduling limits.

Why the restricted row is the good news#

A regulated operator reading a headline that says gambling is banned from apple maps ads would reasonably shelve the channel. That reading is wrong. Gambling and betting sit in the restricted tier, which means permitted subject to jurisdiction disclosures, age restrictions, problem-gambling messages and compliance with applicable law.

Those are the same four obligations a competent operator already carries into every other channel. For the operators folkfox works with across iGaming marketing, that is a door left ajar rather than bolted, and the ones who read the policy instead of the coverage will reach it first.

Healthcare is the genuinely awkward one. Case-by-case evaluation is not a rule you can plan a launch calendar around, so any healthcare marketing programme should treat Maps as a channel that may arrive late, not one that will arrive on the day the flight is booked.

SECTION 03

The 15% credit has a ceiling, and it bites early#

Apple is running an apple maps ads launch incentive, and its shape rewards small budgets far more than large ones. The Ads on Maps page states it as "15% credit back on your monthly spend for a year", capped at "up to 1,000 USD per month", with terms applying.

The terms themselves live on a separate page, and they are worth reading before the budget is signed off. Apple's promotional credit eligibility page names the offer the "Ads on Maps Grand Opening Promo" and sets the annual ceiling explicitly: "a brand can earn up to a total of $12,000 USD in promotional credits with this offer."

Do the arithmetic and the cap starts binding at a monthly spend of about 6,667 US dollars. Below that line you genuinely receive 15%. Above it, the credit is frozen at a thousand dollars while your spend keeps climbing, so the effective rate falls away fast.

What the credit is actually worth
Bar chart showing the effective value of the apple maps ads launch credit falling as monthly spend rises past the cap$1,000/mo: 15$3,000/mo: 15$6,667/mo: 15$10,000/mo: 10$20,000/mo: 5$50,000/mo: 215%11.2%7.5%3.8%0%$1,000/mo$3,000/mo$6,667/mo$10,000/mo$20,000/mo$50,000/mo
Calculated from Apple's stated terms of 15% back capped at 1,000 USD a month. This is arithmetic on published terms, not a measurement of anyone's account.

Read that chart the way a fox reads a stream before crossing, because it is the whole economic case for apple maps ads at small budgets. The incentive is a genuine subsidy for a local advertiser testing a new surface, and a rounding error for a national brand. Plan the test at the size where the money is real.

The apple maps ads deadline is real, and it is not the one being reported#

Most rollout coverage described 11 October 2026 as an ordering deadline. Apple's own eligibility page is more precise, and the precision matters: the requirement is that a brand "starts running a campaign on or before October 11, 2026". Placing an order is not the same as having a live campaign, and only one of those satisfies the condition.

Three things must be true to qualify, per that page. Sign the organisation up for Apple Business, add a valid credit card as the ads payment method, and start running an ads on Maps campaign. Apple also disqualifies line-of-credit payment methods, which quietly excludes the way a good many agencies pay for media.

Two further dates sit underneath. The earning window runs one year from the date the brand first launches a campaign, and unused credit "will roll over and remain available for future ads on Maps spend until December 31, 2027", after which any balance expires. Apple reserves the right to "modify or end this offer at any time", so none of this is a contract.

SECTION 04

How this sits beside google maps ads#

Nobody is buying apple maps ads in a vacuum. Local inventory on the other side of the fence has existed for years, and any planner will be asked the comparison question inside a week.

Google's own Local Ads documentation describes local inventory running across Search, Maps and Waze from a single campaign, tied to physical locations. That breadth is the incumbent's advantage: google maps ads are one surface inside a much larger buy, not a standalone product.

The apple maps ads proposition is narrower and, for now, cleaner. Two placements, two countries, one policy page. The trade is reach for a demographic skew and an uncrowded auction, which is the classic shape of a new surface before the money arrives.

Broad, bundled, mature

Local inventory spans Search, Maps and Waze inside a wider campaign structure, with years of accumulated bidding competition and a restricted-category regime advertisers already navigate.

Narrow, standalone, new

Two placements in two countries, a 57% Gen Z and Millennial skew, a launch credit worth 15% up to a cap, and a prohibited list that removes home services entirely.

TechRepublic's launch explainer confirms the prohibited categories: home services, gambling, dating, and alcohol are all banned in the US/Canada rollout.

The honest planning line is that these are not substitutes yet. One is a mature auction you are already in; the other is a demographic test with a subsidy attached. Anyone pitching apple maps ads as a replacement for google maps ads is selling a story the inventory cannot yet support.

One structural note worth carrying into a planning meeting. MacRumors surfaced the policy in July, a month before the rollout, and MediaPost covered the guidelines the same week. The rules were readable well before the inventory was buyable.

SECTION 05

Five checks before you buy the pin#

Buying apple maps ads well needs no new agency, no replatform and no quarter of discovery. It needs somebody to read a policy page and do one piece of arithmetic before the budget moves.

The five checks, in order
Check the category first

Read Apple's advertising policy against your actual business before anything else. Prohibited means no campaign exists, and no amount of creative fixes it.

Size the credit honestly

Work out where the 1,000 dollar monthly cap lands against your planned spend. Below roughly 6,667 dollars a month it is worth a real 15%. Above it, it decays.

Work back from a live campaign

Apple requires a campaign running by 11 October 2026, not an order placed by then. Put Apple Business signup, card setup and creative approval on a timeline that clears that date with room.

Plan for the skew, not the reach

A 57% Gen Z and Millennial audience is a targeting decision made for you. Brief creative for those cohorts rather than repurposing a general-audience asset.

Set the comparison up front

Baseline your existing local search ads before you launch, so the Maps test is measured against something rather than described against nothing.

The one nobody does#

Check three is the one that gets skipped, because an ordering deadline and a live-campaign deadline read identically in a headline and behave nothing alike in a media plan. One is a purchase order, the other is creative approved, payment set up and a campaign actually serving.

The contrast with Google is instructive on regulated categories. Google requires gambling advertisers to "apply for certification from Google", to target only approved countries, and to run a landing page displaying responsible gambling information, per its gambling and games policy. Apple asks for disclosures and publishes no certification programme at all. Fewer gates, and correspondingly less certainty about where you stand.

The policy page is the media plan. Everything else is decoration around a decision somebody already made for you.
folkfox, on reading vendor rules before vendor announcements

Apple maps ads fit a wider pattern the last fortnight keeps repeating. Apple's commercial surfaces are being rebuilt in public, from app store fees to App Store assets, and the rules land before the inventory does every single time.

If you want the category check, the cap arithmetic and the baseline built before the credit window closes, that is what folkfox app marketing does, and it is the same discipline we bring to PPC and paid search. Quiet, quick, and finished before the auction fills up.

Questions

Frequently asked questions#

What do apple maps ads look like?

There are two formats. Before a search, ads appear inside Suggested Places as customers begin exploring. After a search, a business appears as a promoted pin on the map with a place card attached to it in the results. Both sit inside the normal Maps interface rather than as separate banner units.

Which countries can buy ads on Apple Maps?

The United States and Canada only, as of the 14 August 2026 rollout. Apple states that only advertisers with businesses in those two countries are eligible, so a European or UK business cannot currently buy the inventory even for a US audience.

Is gambling banned from Apple Maps advertising?

No. Gambling and betting sit in Apple's restricted tier rather than the prohibited one. Ads are permitted subject to jurisdiction disclosures, age restrictions, problem-gambling messaging and compliance with applicable law. Several rollout reports described this as a ban, which is inaccurate.

What is actually prohibited on Apple Maps specifically?

Apple's Maps-specific block contains four clauses. Home services such as plumbing, electrical, locksmith, HVAC, pest control, roofing and general contracting are prohibited, as are bail and surety bond services for criminal pretrial release and cryptocurrency ATMs. Medical services are evaluated case by case. Political advertising is also prohibited, but under a general Apple rule rather than a Maps one.

How much is the launch credit really worth?

Apple offers 15% back on monthly spend, capped at 1,000 US dollars a month and 12,000 dollars across the year. The cap binds at roughly 6,667 dollars of monthly spend. Below that you receive a genuine 15%; at 20,000 dollars a month the effective rate is about 5%.

What is the deadline for the Apple Maps launch credit?

Apple requires that a brand starts running a campaign on or before 11 October 2026, which is stricter than the ordering deadline widely reported. You also need an Apple Business signup and a valid credit card on file. Line-of-credit payment methods are excluded, and unused credit expires on 31 December 2027.

Should I move budget from google maps ads to Apple?

Not as a swap. Google's local inventory spans Search, Maps and Waze inside a mature auction, while Apple offers two placements in two countries. Treat Apple as an incremental test with a demographic skew and a launch subsidy, and baseline it against your existing local search ads.
