CAMPAIGN STRUCTURE

The Google Ads campaign types that still exist in 2026

Google keeps folding formats into fewer, fatter survivors. Here is the working list of google ads campaign types you can actually build today, what each one serves, and where the old shortcuts now lead.

Quick answerEight buildable formats remain: Performance Max, PMax for Retail, the PMax LSA variant, Standard Shopping, Demand Gen, Search with AI Max, Video and App. The google ads smart campaign route is closing, so plan around Performance Max.
SECTION 01

The 2026 matrix: eight formats, one page#

google ads smart campaign

Google's campaign menu keeps shrinking, and the steady shrinkage is deliberate. Since 2023 the platform has folded standalone formats into fewer, fatter survivors, so any list of google ads campaign types written even eighteen months ago now reads like a museum label. This entry is the current inventory, checked : every format you can still build from scratch, the inventory it serves, the bidding it accepts and the assets it demands.

Keep it beside the folkfox Google Ads hub and treat it as the den map for the whole estate. Put plainly, this is the google ads campaign types that still exist in 2026, and the single biggest subtraction from any older list is the google ads smart campaign format sliding toward the exit.

The matrix maps eight builds. Three are Performance Max wearing different coats, and one is not a campaign type at all but a feature layer riding on Search. That is the first cunning catch in any honest google ads campaign type comparison: the names no longer describe the shapes, and the shapes no longer respect the old boundaries between search, social-style feeds and video.

Every Google Ads campaign type still buildable, checked 11 August 2026.

Performance MaxSearch, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail, MapsMax Conversions, Max Conversion Value, tCPA, tROASText, images, logos; video and feeds optional

Google's own framing confirms the flagship's reach: Performance Max complements keyword-based Search campaigns to find customers who convert across YouTube, Display, Search, Discover, Gmail and Maps, per Google Ads Help, 2026. Everything else in the table is either a specialist that survived because its feed or its format could not be automated away, or a consolidation point that swallowed the specialists that could. The one deliberate absence from that table matters as much as its rows: the google ads smart campaign format is not listed, because Google no longer treats it as buildable from scratch.

SECTION 02

One name, three animals: the Performance Max family#

Performance Max is the default answer to most briefs now. From a single campaign it serves Search, YouTube, Display, Discover, Gmail and Maps; you supply goals, budgets, audience signals and raw assets, and the machine assembles and places the ads, per About Performance Max campaigns, 2026. Its asset appetite is real: text, images and logos are mandatory, while video and feeds are optional but strongly rewarded.

PMax for Retail is the same shell with a Merchant Center feed bolted in as the load-bearing wall. It inherited Smart Shopping's territory, and the feed decides what can serve long before any bidding boundaries do. If your margin lives in a product feed, this variant is the one doing the heavy lifting in your account.

The third animal wears the family name but hunts a different forest. In Google began moving Local Services Ads into a purpose-built Performance Max variant with pay-per-lead goals, starting with select home and storefront service advertisers in the United States, checked . Despite the PMax badge, these campaigns show exclusively on Google Search and Google Maps, keep the pay-for-valid-leads model rather than paying for clicks, and sync business details one way from a Google Business Profile, per Google's transition notice, 2026. Anyone assuming the name means Display and YouTube sprawl has misread the scent: this is the narrowest surviving format, not the widest.

SECTION 03

The Google Ads Smart campaign exit ramp#

Smart campaigns were the burrow entrance for small advertisers: hand Google a business description and a budget, and your ad would automatically show across Google Search, Google Maps, YouTube, partner websites and the Display Network, per How Smart campaigns work, 2026. That sly simplicity is exactly what Performance Max now promises at larger scale, and Google has begun sealing the old entrance.

From the Google Ads API no longer accepts new google ads smart campaign creation: the API added a dedicated SmartCampaignErrorEnum.CREATION_FAILED error for exactly this case, checked , per the Google Ads API release notes. The interface still offers the google ads smart campaign format for now, but the API cut is the sharpest signal Google gives about direction: the machinery gets switched off before the door gets locked. Anyone auditing an older account should treat every remaining google ads smart campaign as a countdown, not a fixture.

Google Ads Smart campaign

One business description, one budget, automatic placements across Search, Maps, YouTube and Display, minimal reporting and minimal control. Built for owners with no time to forage through settings.

Performance Max

Goals, budgets, audience signals and assets in; cross-channel serving with conversion-based bidding, brand controls and asset reporting out. More work, more wiring, considerably more say in what the machine does.

AI Max is a layer, not a listing#

The other naming trap runs the opposite way. Marketers hunt the interface for an AI Max campaign and find nothing, because AI Max is not a ninth campaign type: it is a suite of targeting and creative enhancements that rides on ordinary Search campaigns, spanning broader search term matching, generative text customisation and final URL expansion. Google's own figure puts the prize at 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS for advertisers who switch it on, per About AI Max for Search campaigns, 2026. In any google ads campaign type comparison, count Search once and treat AI Max as its optional engine upgrade.

SECTION 04

Demand Gen: the format that ate three others#

Demand Gen is Google's mid-funnel, visual-first consolidation point. It serves YouTube in-stream, in-feed and Shorts placements plus Discover and Gmail, and Google's page now adds the Google Display Network to that roster because of the measured migration below, per About Demand Gen campaigns, checked 11 August 2026. Three formats have already been folded, or are being folded, into it.

Three fold-ins, one survivor
Discovery, folded early 2024

Discovery campaigns became eligible to move from October 2023, and Google launched automatic upgrades for all remaining Discovery campaigns between and , per Search Engine Land, 2023.

Video Action, folded by April 2026

New Video Action creation was switched off in , automatic upgrades began in , and Google upgraded the final campaigns to Demand Gen by , per Google Ads Help, 2026.

Display, folding now

Google Display Ads campaigns are moving to Demand Gen as the Google Display Network. Voluntary migration via the in-account tool opened in ; the new-build lockout and automatic migration of remaining campaigns come later, with no completed-retirement date stated, checked , per About Demand Gen campaigns, 2026.

The forced folding matters beyond the org chart. Standalone Display still exists today, so do not write it off; but every new brief should assume the Demand Gen shell is where that budget behaves next. After any automatic upgrade, walk the settings line by line: migrated campaigns inherit status and budget, yet the manual controls you relied on may not survive the trip, and the practical picture only becomes clear once you trail the transition inside your own account.

SECTION 05

Feeds, films and phones: the specialists#

Standard Shopping survives, whatever the conference obituaries claim. It runs from Merchant Center product data rather than keywords: the feed you submit carries the product details that decide how and where ads show, per About Shopping ads, 2026. Its ads appear across the Shopping tab, Google Search next to results and Search partner websites when partners are enabled, and it keeps the manual levers PMax removed: Manual CPC, Max Clicks and product-group segmentation, with tROAS available once conversion volume is steady. Feed-first formats reward tidy data more than clever copy. None of that applies to a fading google ads smart campaign, which never needed a feed at all.

Video campaigns keep their own den for brand work under the reach, views and engagement objectives. The formats stay distinct: skippable in-stream, where the viewer can skip after 5 seconds; non-skippable in-stream at 60 seconds or shorter; bumper ads at 6 seconds or shorter; in-feed video; and Shorts placements, per About video ad formats, 2026. CPV and CPM buying survive here for when Demand Gen's conversion push does not fit a brand brief.

App campaigns promote across Google's largest properties, including Search, Google Play, YouTube, Discover and the Google Display Network, assembling ads from your text, images, video and HTML5 plus the store listing itself, per About App campaigns, 2026. Three subtypes persist: installs, engagement and pre-registration.

SECTION 06

When survivors share a query#

Consolidation creates overlap, and overlap creates auction questions. When Performance Max and Demand Gen sit in the same account and could serve the same impression, they interact on normal auction dynamics, with the campaign holding the highest Ad Rank prioritised to serve the ad, per How Performance Max interacts with other campaigns, 2026. One carve-out matters daily: a Search campaign whose keyword exactly matches, or is spell-corrected to, the query is preferred over Performance Max, per the same Google guidance, 2026. Exact match remains the sharpest tooth in the account, which is why cunning structures still start with Search and let PMax forage in the gaps.

If you are rebuilding an account around the eight survivors, our PPC management service maps budgets to formats without letting the automation outfox the strategy, and our SEO and GEO work keeps organic catching whatever paid hands back. Questions

Frequently asked questions#

How many Google Ads campaign types can I still build in 2026?

Eight, as of a check on 11 August 2026: Performance Max, PMax for Retail, the PMax LSA variant, Standard Shopping, Demand Gen, Search (with the optional AI Max layer), Video and App. Discovery and Video Action campaigns have already folded into Demand Gen, standalone Display is migrating into Demand Gen now, and the google ads smart campaign format is being sealed off at the API rather than added to that list.

Is AI Max a separate Google Ads campaign type?

No. AI Max is a suite of targeting and creative enhancements layered onto ordinary Search campaigns, covering search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion. You will not find an AI Max option in the campaign-creation menu. Google reports advertisers who activate it typically see 14% more conversions or conversion value at a similar CPA or ROAS.

Can I still create a Google Ads Smart campaign?

The interface still offers the google ads smart campaign format, but the direction is clear: from 3 August 2026 the Google Ads API no longer allows new google ads smart campaign creation, though existing ones can be updated and keep serving. Google recommends Performance Max as the replacement, with Search or Demand Gen depending on your goals.

What happened to Discovery, Video Action and Display campaigns?

All three folded, or are folding, into Demand Gen. Discovery campaigns were automatically upgraded between January and March 2024. Video Action creation stopped in April 2025 and the final campaigns were upgraded by April 2026. Standalone Display began voluntary migration in June 2026, with automatic migration to follow; it still existed when checked on 11 August 2026.

Does the Performance Max LSA variant show ads on YouTube or Display?

No. Despite the Performance Max name, the Local Services Ads variant shows exclusively on Google Search and Google Maps. It keeps the pay-per-lead model, runs on fully automated budgets and pulls business details from a synced Google Business Profile, so it is the narrowest campaign type in the 2026 inventory, not the widest.

Which Google Ads campaign types need a Merchant Center feed?

Standard Shopping cannot run without one, since the product data replaces keywords entirely. PMax for Retail also requires the feed alongside text, images and logos. Ordinary Performance Max treats feeds as optional, and Demand Gen, Search, Video and App campaigns do not use Merchant Center product data at all.

What replaces a Google Ads Smart campaign once it stops serving?

Google points advertisers running a google ads smart campaign toward Performance Max for most small-business goals, since PMax automates placement across Search, Maps, YouTube and Display in the same way but adds a genuine Conversions column, brand controls and asset-level reporting the older format never gave you.
