YouTube Ads that earn the first five seconds#
Quick answer: YouTube ads are video adverts bought through Google Ads and shown in-stream, in-feed and in Shorts. You choose the format and the audience, and with skippable formats you pay only when a viewer chooses to watch.

What are YouTube ads?#
A video campaign is the Google Ads campaign type that buys video adverts on YouTube at auction. Inside the account they run as Google video campaigns: you upload the creative, choose who should see it, and set what a view or a thousand impressions is worth to you.
The defining trick is choice. Google research in the Journal of Advertising Research found skippable adverts can match non-skippable ones per impression, and viewers strongly prefer having the skip button. Formats, targeting and the wider account all meet at the Google Ads hub.
How the buying works#
You bid per view or per thousand impressions at auction. On skippable formats the skip itself is free: you are charged when a viewer keeps watching or acts, so weak creative punishes only its maker. Targeting stacks audiences, topics and placements on top of the format, and delivery grows more automated the broader you go.
Context is a lever, not a lottery. Research in the Journal of Interactive Marketing found high-arousal skippable adverts hold viewers longer and work hardest in congruent content contexts.
| Lever | What it means |
|---|---|
| Format | how the advert appears and how you are charged |
| Audience | who sees it: audiences, topics and placements |
| Automation | how much delivery you hand to Google: Demand Gen sits at the automated end |
When video pays, and when it does not
Video pays when attention is the bottleneck: a new category, an unknown brand, a story no search ad can tell. It builds the demand your capture campaigns harvest later.
Short can beat long. A study of 287 viewers found informative six-second bumper adverts the most involving format on YouTube, with involvement shaping brand attitude and purchase intent.
It does not pay when the creative is an afterthought, when the budget cannot sustain frequency, or when you need leads this week. That money belongs in capture.
Where your ads on YouTube run
In-stream slots play before or during videos. In-feed placements sit in search results, the home feed and beside related videos. Shorts slips adverts between clips, and Google video partners extend the same buy beyond YouTube itself.
Placement is context. The Journal of Interactive Marketing work showed skippable adverts perform best when the surrounding content is congruent with the advert, so where it runs shapes how it lands.
You choose surfaces at campaign level and can exclude the ones that do not fit your brand.
Why run video at all?
The test is incrementality: did the advert create demand that would not exist otherwise. Lift in branded searches, direct visits and conversions among the exposed audience is the evidence. Last click is not.
The viewer's choice is the point. Google's own research found skippable adverts as effective per impression as forced ones, with viewers clearly preferring the choice, so YouTube ads can respect attention and still work.
Pair creation with capture: video plants the name people later type, so run it beside search campaigns that catch the searches it starts.
Video Format Selector
Answer four questions and the tool maps them to skippable ads, bumper ads, in-feed video ads and YouTube Shorts ads, with one reason sentence per pick. The rules sit in plain sight and you can overrule them.

The tool never invents costs, reach or results: it only applies the rules above to your four answers.
Five-Second Hook Builder
Give it your offer, the pain it ends and one proof point. It assembles opening shots, spoken lines, caption text and a pattern interrupt, all editable, all copyable. Drafts to shoot, not guarantees.
Five-Second Hook Builder
Runs entirely in your browser. Nothing you type leaves this page.
Your draft saves automatically in this browser tab, and only in this browser tab.
These are drafts to shoot and test, not guarantees. The first five seconds decide whether the skip button wins, so shoot two or three variants and let the view rate judge.
Video Reach Calculator
Enter budget, CPM, view rate, completion rate and frequency from your own plan; it returns impressions, views, completed views and unique reach with the maths shown in full. Every number is yours, none are invented.

Your inputs save automatically in this browser tab, and only in this browser tab.
The tool never guesses CPMs, view rates or reach. Pull the inputs from your own campaign history or media plan, and treat the outputs as arithmetic on your assumptions, not a forecast.
Ad Sequence Storyboard
Plot a five-step sequence, problem to proof to explanation to objection to conversion, one card per step with the message and the asset that carries it, then export the storyboard as text.

Your storyboard saves automatically in this browser tab, and only in this browser tab.
Sequences suit always-on budgets that can afford repeat exposure: each step assumes the viewer met the one before, so keep every message able to stand alone as well.
Subtitle and Safe-Zone Checker
Load a still frame from your advert. The tool lays mobile and desktop safe-zone guides and a caption band over it, and you tick the checks your own eyes confirm. The frame never leaves your browser.
Subtitle and Safe-Zone Checker
Runs entirely in your browser. The image is read locally and never uploaded.
Your slider settings and ticks save automatically in this browser tab. The image itself is never stored.
Check one frame per key moment: the hook, the proof and the end card. Most viewing happens on phones with the sound off, so the caption band earns its keep.
