Google Ads AI Max arrives on 1 September whether you asked or not
A migration you did not request, on a date you did not choose, changing the two things a regulated advertiser controls most tightly: which queries you answer, and what your advert says.

What happens when Google Ads AI Max upgrades you#

The fox does not fight the wind, it reads it. Something is shifting in the undergrowth of paid search, and the sensible response is neither panic nor a shrug: it is a survey of the ground before the ground moves.
Eligible Search campaigns start moving automatically to google ads ai max from 1 September 2026, with the rollout expected to conclude by the end of September, as reported by Search Engine Land. The trigger is not campaign performance and not account size. It is which legacy features a campaign already runs.
Two doors lead into google ads ai max, and they do not open onto the same room. Campaigns running automatically created assets are upgraded with search term matching and text customisation both enabled, with final URL expansion following text customisation. Campaigns using only the campaign-level broad match setting get search term matching alone. That distinction decides how much creative control leaves the building.
The google ads ai max opt-out is not where you would look#
Here is the hinge of the whole thing. You do not decline the migration. You disable the legacy feature that qualifies the campaign for it, at ad group level, before 1 September. PPC Land reports the deadline reached advertisers by email on 5 August 2026, signed by the Google Ads Team, with no accompanying blog post.
Google's stated intent is continuity rather than disruption: the rollout is described as preserving existing campaign behaviour as closely as possible by applying settings that mirror current configurations. Pinned assets in responsive search ads continue to be respected. That is a real reassurance, and a narrower promise than it first sounds, because mirroring a configuration is not the same as mirroring an outcome.
Upgraded with search term matching and text customisation enabled. Final URL expansion follows text customisation. This is the deepest change to creative control.
Upgraded with search term matching alone. Query matching widens, advert text stays as written.
Not in scope. Nothing changes on 1 September without a deliberate decision.
Respected through the migration, per Google's stated approach. Pinning remains the sharpest control an advertiser holds.
Switch the qualifying legacy feature off at ad group level before 1 September. There is no decline button.
Read that the way a fox reads a hedgerow: the gaps matter more than the growth. If nobody switched on automatically created assets, this is a quiet fortnight. If somebody did, twenty months ago, in a test that was never turned off, it is not.
Why this lands hardest on regulated advertisers#
For a shoe shop, text customisation is a performance question. For a licensed operator, a lender or a clinic, it is a compliance question wearing a performance costume.
Consider what text customisation does. It rewrites headline text to match the query more closely. In a category where an approved wording list exists, where legal signed off a specific phrase, and where a regulator can ask who authorised a claim, generated copy is a governance gap rather than a feature. We wrote about that failure mode in the regulator asked who signed off the campaign, and google ads ai max widens the same crack.
Final URL expansion carries a quieter risk. It sends traffic to pages the campaign did not name, and PPC Land flags that static tracking templates without an lpurl tag can return a 404 once expansion activates. A broken landing page is bad. A live landing page you never compliance-checked is worse, and more likely.
Two dated changes, seventeen days apart, both touching the same campaigns. The bidding change lands first, and we unpicked its mechanics in on 17 August, your budget-capped campaigns stop overachieving. Then google ads ai max lands on 1 September. Measure across both and you will not be able to tell which one moved the number.
The quieter change that could lock you out#
While the industry watches google ads ai max, a second change prowls the perimeter of your account, affecting who may hold the keys rather than what the adverts say.
Google has begun piloting a corporate email domain requirement for sensitive account actions. Its documentation states that users accessing Google Ads via free domain email addresses such as gmail.com or yahoo.com will be blocked from completing sensitive actions and must move to a corporate email domain, per Google Ads Help. The named sensitive actions are account linking updates and user access changes.
Google's reasoning is that free domains lack central administrative oversight and domain-level ownership verification. The list of sensitive actions is explicitly described as non-exhaustive and subject to change without prior notice. Reporting and routine campaign edits remain available to free-domain logins for now.
Search Engine Land adds two operational details worth writing down: accounts with three or more active admins may trigger multi-party approval on admin changes, and passkeys must be recreated when moving to a corporate login.
A freelancer's personal inbox
The only account admin is a contractor logging in from a personal address. When the engagement ends, access removal depends on that person's goodwill, and under the pilot the account may be unable to change user access at all.
A verified corporate domain
Admins sit on a domain the business owns and can suspend centrally. Offboarding is an IT action, not a favour, and it produces the audit trail a regulator or an acquirer will ask for.
Agencies should read this plainly rather than defensively. A boutique consultancy running a licensed client's account from a personal address is one policy update away from being unable to hand that account back cleanly.
Smart Bidding change
Target CPA and Target ROAS become binding on budget-limited campaigns.

Five moves that keep control in your hands#
None of this requires a rebuild, and none of it requires refusing automation on principle. Good google ads automation is a bargain: you trade some control for some reach. The only bad version is the one you did not know you had agreed to.
Start with the audit, because everything depends on knowing which campaigns are in scope. Automatically created assets and broad match google ads settings are both switches somebody flipped once, often during a test, and tests become permanent through inattention rather than decision.
Pinning is the sharpest tool you still hold#
Pinned assets in responsive search ads are respected through google ads ai max. For a regulated advertiser that is not a nicety, it is the mechanism by which approved wording survives contact with a generative system. Pin the licence statement, pin the risk warning, pin the age gate. Everything unpinned is a candidate for rewriting.
Then fix the tracking templates, because that failure produces a 404 rather than a merely suboptimal outcome. If a template hard-codes a destination without an lpurl tag, expansion can break it, and a broken page in a licensed category is a bad afternoon.
| Move | Owner | Evidence it worked |
|---|---|---|
| Audit for legacy features | Paid media | A dated list of every campaign with ACA or campaign-level broad match |
| Pin compliance-critical assets | Paid media and legal | Pinned headline positions matching the approved wording list |
| Fix tracking templates | Analytics | Every template contains an lpurl tag and resolves to a 200 |
| Move admins to a corporate domain | Operations | No account admin holds a free-domain login |
| Baseline before 17 August | Analytics | A saved report covering the fortnight to 16 August |
Lead generation accounts have a further wrinkle. Google has published help documentation for pay-per-lead goals in Performance Max, covering campaign settings and best practices, a move Search Engine Land reads as folding Local Services Ads into Performance Max. Paying per lead shifts lead-quality definitions onto Google's business categories rather than your own funnel, which in a licensed vertical is a question for compliance before it is one for finance.
There is a competitive footnote too. Microsoft Advertising moved the other way this week, shipping excluded content terms for Audience Ads supporting up to 1,000 phrases per list. One platform is widening what its system may write on your behalf; the other is narrowing where your advert may appear. A sensible media plan notices when two vendors move in opposite directions.
Microsoft also expanded Clarity with AI Visibility Topic Insights, grouping AI citations by subject to show which topics AI systems associate with a brand, according to Search Engine Journal. A first-party citation report is firmer footing than a third-party estimate, and it pairs with the measurement approach in search traffic fell 34 per cent.
Measuring a migration you did not choose#
The measurement problem is subtle, and it is where most accounts will quietly lose the plot. Google ads ai max mirrors your settings; it does not mirror your query mix, and the query mix is where the money is decided.
Search term matching widens which queries a campaign may answer. That is the point of it. The consequence is that cost per acquisition can hold steady while the composition underneath changes completely, and an unchanged headline number is the easiest thing in the world to mistake for an unchanged campaign.
So change what you watch. Segment by search term at least weekly through September, and treat any new query theme as a compliance review item before it is a performance item. In a licensed category the question is not only whether a query converts, it is whether you are permitted to answer it at all.
One report to build this week#
Build a search terms report comparing the fortnight to 16 August against the fortnight from 1 September, segmented by branded and unbranded, and by whether the term existed before. New terms are the whole story. If they are close cousins of your existing quarry, ai max google ads is working as advertised. If they are strangers, you have a targeting problem that will not reach the CPA for another month.
Watch the assets too. Where text customisation is live, log the generated headlines weekly and keep the log. It is dull work, and it is the only record you will have if someone later asks what your advert said on a given Tuesday.
The broader pattern deserves naming. Platforms are steadily converting settings into defaults, and defaults into infrastructure. Each step is defensible; the cumulative effect is a slow transfer of editorial control from the advertiser to the auction. Recognising that is planning, not cynicism, and it is the same instinct we brought to Google's policy shift on government documents.
If you want the google ads ai max audit run rather than described, that is what folkfox PPC and paid search does, and the same discipline applies across iGaming marketing and FinTech marketing, where an unapproved headline is a licence question rather than a style note.
Frequently asked questions#
What is Google Ads AI Max and when does it arrive?
AI Max is a package of Search campaign features covering search term matching, text customisation and final URL expansion. Eligible Search campaigns begin upgrading automatically from 1 September 2026, with the rollout expected to finish by the end of that month.
Can I refuse the AI Max upgrade?
Not directly. There is no decline button on the migration. Instead you disable the legacy feature that makes a campaign eligible, either automatically created assets or campaign-level broad match, at ad group level before 1 September.
Which campaigns get text customisation switched on?
Campaigns running automatically created assets are upgraded with both search term matching and text customisation enabled, and final URL expansion follows text customisation. Campaigns using only campaign-level broad match receive search term matching alone.
Do pinned headlines survive the migration?
Yes. Pinned assets in responsive search ads continue to be respected through the upgrade. For regulated advertisers, pinning is the practical mechanism for keeping approved wording intact when generative text features are active.
Why might my tracking break after the upgrade?
Final URL expansion sends traffic to pages the campaign did not explicitly name. A static tracking template that hard-codes a destination without an lpurl tag can return a 404 once expansion activates, so templates should be checked before September.
What is the corporate email requirement in Google Ads?
Google is piloting a rule blocking free domain logins, such as gmail.com addresses, from completing sensitive actions including account linking updates and user access changes. Reporting and routine campaign edits are unaffected for now.
